in 1818, Bridget “Biddy” Mason was born into slavery in Hancock County, GA. Mason was a nurse, a real estate entrepreneur and philanthropist in her life. In her 30s, she petitioned a court in California for her freedom and won.
She was one of the first African Americans to purchase land in Los Angeles, and she amassed a fortune of nearly $300,000. She used the money to create an elementary school for black children, founded an AME Church in Los Angeles and donated to charity.
