At the Rededicate 250 National Jubilee of Prayer on May 17, Tulsi Gabbard addressed a crowd gathered to mark the spiritual heritage of the United States with a single line that landed harder than any policy speech she has given since taking office. “There’s only one number one, and that’s God.” The remark, delivered as part of a broader meditation on the faith of the Founders, came from one of the most powerful intelligence officials in the world, a former Democratic congresswoman and combat veteran now serving in the Trump administration. The crowd responded the way crowds respond when a public official says something publicly that most of the country only whispers privately. Gabbard’s faith journey is unusual. A practicing Hindu raised in Hawaii, a soldier deployed to Iraq, a politician who left her former party, and a woman who has spoken often about finding hope in something larger than herself. Whatever someone’s theology, the principle she named is woven through every honest reading of Scripture. A nation that worships itself eventually breaks itself. “You shall have no other gods before me.” — Exodus 20:3. Pride collapses what humility preserves. The 250th year of the American experiment is the right moment to remember who actually built it and who actually keeps it. Power without reverence becomes tyranny. Liberty without God becomes license. The line she said out loud is the line every generation has to relearn. A sitting U.S. Senator just stood in front of a room full of seminary students and said the quiet part out loud. Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri declared during a Duke K. McCall Leadership Lecture at Boyce College of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, that the United States “was founded on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” He went further, telling the audience the country “was not founded on some Enlightenment secularism” and rejecting the idea that America rests on what he called a series of neutral principles. Hawley warned the students the nation is in the middle of a spiritual crisis caused by walking away from Christian teaching, and he called on the Church to refuse the cultural demand to “stay put” behind closed doors. The statement matters because it lands in a country where the conversation about America’s spiritual roots has been buried under decades of revisionism. Public schools rarely teach it. Most major outlets ignore it. Christians have been told for years that mentioning the faith of the early American moment is somehow extreme. Whether every historian agrees with the framing, the cultural weight of a sitting senator naming Jesus by name in a public forum is real. It pushes back against the assumption that faith belongs only in private. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.” — Psalm 33:12 A nation does not lose its soul in a single moment. It loses it slowly, one silenced voice at a time, until the next generation forgets there was ever anything worth standing for. Boldness in the public square is not a political act. It is a spiritual one. How should Christians today carry their faith into spaces that have been taught to reject it?

Franklin Graham strongly criticized Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico after Talarico said his abortion-rights position comes “because of my faith” and claimed, “The Bible is silent on abortion.”

Talarico argued that abortion decisions should not belong to “government,” “politicians,” or “the state,” saying he trusts Texas women to make those decisions with family, doctors, and faith leaders.

Graham rejected that view, writing, “The Bible is not silent on abortion as he claims — that’s an absolute lie.” He pointed to Exodus 20:13, saying, “God commands us, ‘You shall not murder.’ Abortion is taking a life.”

Other Christian voices also pushed back, arguing that Scripture teaches the value of unborn life and that Christian teaching cannot be separated from the belief that all people are made in the image of God.
