âď¸âď¸ Colorado Snow Forecast: Up to 12 Inches Expected as Winter Weather Returns to the High Country
Fall travel in Colorado is about to get a winter preview. Snow is forecast to move across parts of the stateâs mountainous terrain Wednesday, October 14, bringing accumulating snow, gusty winds, and potentially hazardous driving conditions to several popular mountain routes.
The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories for multiple mountain regions, with snowfall totals reaching 6 to 12 inches in some areas above 9,000 feet. Other mountain ranges could see 4 to 10 inches, accompanied by wind gusts reaching 35 mph.
For travelers heading into Coloradoâs high country, the message is straightforward: beautiful fall scenery could quickly give way to snow-covered roads and challenging driving conditions.
Where Is the Heaviest Snow Expected?
The developing storm will primarily affect Coloradoâs higher elevations, where temperatures will be cold enough to support accumulating snow.
The latest advisories identify several areas to watch:
* Northern and central mountains: Approximately 6â12 inches of snow above 9,000 feet, including areas near Berthoud Pass, Cameron Pass, Rabbit Ears Pass, and the Eisenhower Tunnel.
* Eastern San Juan Mountains: Around 4â9 inches possible above 10,000 feet.
* Eastern Sawatch Mountains and Western Mosquito Range: Approximately 5â10 inches above 11,000 feet, with wind gusts up to 35 mph.
* Western and central Colorado: Around 4â8 inches in some higher-elevation areas, including portions of the Flat Tops, West Elk, and Sawatch mountains.
* San Juan Mountains: Additional accumulating snow is possible at elevations above 10,000 feet.
