Sad and angry today. “The world is on fire it’s more than I can handle” by Sarah McLaughlin has been on repeat in my brain for months, (yes I’m a white girl who was a teen during Lilith fair) So I try to “do what I am able.” Call and write District Attorneys, Mayors, Governors, City Councils. Black Lives Matter friends. This is not a trend this is urgent. People are dying. Also from a pandemic that has has somehow become partisan. And the world is literally on fire. And somehow their are those who share my faith who can’t wear a mask or trouble themselves with “other people’s problems.” This is love your neighbor time people. This is pick up your bucket, pick up a book and learn, pick up a phone and call. Do something. Pray yes pray but let’s not pretend that these things that don’t affect us yet don’t matter. Let’s not look only to the interests of ourselves but also to the interests of others. Value others above yourself. Philippians 2 more or less. So what does that have to do with a palette of tomatoes etc. I guess this was one of my buckets everyone’s got to eat and food pantries are in huge need right now with so many people out of work. This freeze and snow will hopefully help put out some of the fires but my garden grown vegetable contributions will be over. Also aren’t they beautiful? Their delicious too. They shine in different ways in different dishes and having a garden full of all different varieties and types of plants help me avoid pests and diseases attract and support pollinators and have an abundant crop. Biodiversity is strength on all of God’s green earth and preferencing one variety above all others is how you get the potato famine. The only preferencing we are supposed to do as Christ followers is others above ourself. What does that look like for you? Thank you to everyone who has lead the way in these matters. There is so much work to do.
