Des Moines proudly received the designation as Local 4 on February 28,1918, the fourth recognized local to charter with the IAFF. From its inception, the goals of the Des Moines Association of Professional Firefighters has remained unchanged; a decent wage for a skilled, difficult and dangerous profession; protection for the firefighter's family; a pension tailored to limited working years on the

job with cost of living adjustments; modern protective clothing and equipment to make a very dangerous job, as safe as possible.

What happens when a box of screws fall off the back of a truck???

While typically not a fire department task, the opportunity recently presented itself for the DMFD Local 4 firefighters of Station 5. They got all the screws they could find and made sure the residents and visitors passing through their neighborhood didn't go home with a fun little surprise in their tire at the end of their work day.

It’s been a busy time in Des Moines recently for our DMFD Local 4 firefighters.

Pictured here are the Hazmat team and Water Emergency Team(WET) working together to soak up some gasoline after a truck went backwards into the water while trying to load his boat at Easter Lake.
You may not imagine these are some of the things we would be doing, but keeping it safe, and protecting residents and guests to Des Moines is our priority.

Keeping the lake safe for recreation is awesome, especially around this time of year!

Be safe this holiday weekend and remember, your DMFD Local Four firefighters are at the station 24/7.
We know it’s so much fun to shoot off fireworks every year, and especially this year with the 250, but try to remember your neighbors and some of the elements of fire safety. We really don’t want you to burn down your neighbors shed, or put an eye out this holiday.

The Des Moines Menace game at Mediacom Stadium holds some extra excitement for our members, as are very own Captain Chickering’s son is playing for the Menace this season.

Our members work at every game as EMS support, and earlier this season were able to catch the young Chickering in action firsthand. Go check out the Menace tomorrow night, July 3rd in their Stars & Stripes game at Mediacom Stadium!

This week a handful of our members attended the Iowa Professional Fire Fighters 102nd annual convention hosted by Waterloo Firefighters IAFF L66.

Today is "National Beauticians Day!"
A day dedicated to honor the talented and licensed cosmetologists, hairstylists, estheticians, and nail technicians who help us look and feel our best.
Here at the station we try to keep each other looking our best, and it's actually pretty easy with a face like this. (What a beautiful man!)

One of the questions we are frequently asked by kids during tours is "how tall are your ladders?"

Our ladders are 75ft ladders that are mounted to the top of the trucks at stations 3, 6, 8, and 9. It's hard to grasp how high that is until you're up in the air on one. These ladders are perfect for getting water from the air above a structure fire, or performing a rescue from a high rise or mid rise structure.

The ladder slides down to a manageable length that sits and rides above the trucks, that themselves are 42ft 2in(but most people already know that length.)
