DON’T HAND OVER YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM!! Handing your nervous system over to someone means giving someone else too much control over your emotional state, sense of safety, self-worth, or inner peace.
Healthy connection and vulnerability are not the problem.
The problem is giving that level of emotional access to people who have not shown they can handle it with care.
When we overshare with unsafe people, chase approval, seek constant reassurance, or work overtime for someone’s attention, we slowly place our sense of stability into their hands.
And when they are inconsistent, dismissive, critical, unavailable, manipulative, or emotionally unsafe, our nervous system pays the price.
Some signs this may be happening:
• Needing someone else’s approval before you can relax
• Letting another person’s mood determine your entire day
• Feeling calm only when someone texts back immediately
• Constantly scanning for signs someone is upset with you
• Walking on eggshells to avoid emotional fallout
• Losing your appetite, sleep, or focus whenever someone withdraws affection
The goal is not to stop needing people.
The goal is to become more intentional about who gets access to your vulnerability, emotions, energy, and nervous system.
Not everyone is safe enough to hold them well.
