Learn My Skin Slip Tip…

Skin slip is such a pain to deal with and trying to suture an incision closed after skin slip has set in is one of the the biggest hassles around.

When skin slip is present it is often accompanied by edema (moisture collection in the tissues) which makes suturing without tearing through the skin nearly impossible.

The epidermis is the thinnest layer of the skin and is the first layer to throw in the towel with the fight against decomposition after we die. The dermis is under the epidermis and is the thickest layer of the skin.

When suturing takes place the dermis is usually what acts as an anchor for my needle and suturing thread. When there is a poor level of preservation along with moisture, decomposition and hungry bacteria the skin can actually tear and make it nearly impossible to close an incision. I figured out a fail safe way to close the incision and preserve the tissue at the same time to prevent leaking or “wicking” at the line of closure. Here’s how I do it….

💀Pro Tip:

1. Apply my full face respirator
2. I use a 22 gauge needle 💉 to inject the open incision and surrounding tissue with Dodge’s 50 Cav aka “The Green Death.”
3. Allow 1-3 minutes for tissue to firm
4. Suture incision as normal

Use Plastalina for facial Reconstruction on the dead

Using Plastalina for sculpting facial features, particularly the human eye, offers several benefits. I prefer Plastalina to other modeling clays for the following purposes.

1. 💀Ease of Manipulation. Plastalina is a non-hardening modeling clay that remains pliable, it allows me to sculpt easily shape and reshape fine details such as the intricate contours of the eye or ears without the material drying out or cracking.

2. 💀Smooth Texture. Plastalina has a smooth and consistent texture, which is ideal for creating realistic and refined details in facial features. This quality helps in achieving lifelike representations of the eye 👁️ nose 👃 or ear👂and is perfect for mortuary cosmetic application.

3. 💀It’s totally DURABLE and it’s Reusable!
This is particularly useful for practice and experimentation during a severely traumatic case that involves massive crushing head wounds. This enables me to continually refine my techniques and make adjustments as needed without wasting material.

Pro Tip 💀

Manipulate the molding clay for several minutes with an ungloved hand. The heat from your hand helps to smooth the wax and create lifelike appearance.

Eye 👁 donation has become extremely common but it really is an easy repair and the body can absolutely still be viewed.

After 🧪🧤embalming, I gently swab the eye 👁 socket with Dodge brand “SUPER” gel (or dyrene ||) to cauterize the tissue compromised by the enucleation.

I let the SUPER Gel work while I do cavity work or clean the embalming table. After a short time has passed the tissue inside the eye socket is cauterized odor free and ready for restoration and prosthetic.

💀 Pro tip: I liberally apply massage cream around the eye 👁 PRIOR to swabbing with cauterizing SUPER gel. Some autopsy gels have bleaching properties and the massage cream helps to control bleaching. The Dodge brand (Dryene II) has this exact effect making it easy to see what tissue has been preserved and cauterized and is great for detail work.

Not all autopsy gels work equally. Do not make the mistake of substituting another brand and expect the same result as my tip today. Dodge Supergel Dryene II is superior to other gels for this particular job.

Nails often fall off after death...

As if preserving the body itself is not a challenge enough, there is the matter of the hands and nails.

The hands and the face are typically the only parts of the body the family will see at the viewing. This makes me wonder why on earth so many morticians refuse to acknowledge this fact and leave nails and hands looking so horribly.

A manicure is not only a form of self care and expresses to families that time and personalized care has been offered as a valued service, it is an expression of ones self. We all want to remember our loved ones the way they were in life.

I was shocked to find that the local nail tech charges $120 for a gel manicure. Wowzers! Every two weeks her clients visit and whip out that sweet chunk of change so the world can see the way they want to express their personal style.

After death the nails become brittle as vital hydration is lost through the dying process and cessation of thermoregulation. Embalming chemicals or a rise in body temperature immediately before death can add to the brittle effect.

I know I can’t get this wrong for my families so I pay special attention to the hands and manicure as needed (it helps that I am a licensed nail tech). A post mortem manicure is actually quite involved if done correctly so today I will give you one simple tip for success and if you like it you can take my Progressive Desairology class to learn the process in depth.

💀Pro Tip: Avoid filing the nail like a see saw from side to side. Nails can crack, split and in some instances completely fall off!

💀Pro Tip: File gently and evenly in one direction with a 100-180 grit nail file and proceed with manicuring

Hope you like this week’s Desairology tip. Until next week....Happy Embalming!

How much Dispray do I use to treat tissue gas?

Before listing the volume of solution recommended by body weight, I will remind you that Embalming is one part ART and one part SCIENCE which lends to the fact that all embalming guidelines are subject to the discretion of the embalmer.

💀My recommendations are approximate; the embalmer must use her judgment based upon the situation and case at hand.

Dealing with tissue case or being suspect that tissue gas may rear its ugly head (no pun intended) can be super stressful for any embalmer. The real trick to avoiding a problematic situation is having not only this valuable knowledge, but also having the correct chemicals on hand to treat such a case.

Leaving a body that is infected with this spooky bacteria 🦠 aka (clostridium perfringens) that leads to 💨tissue gas untreated is a really bad idea.

Untreated or inadequately treated tissue gas cases can lead to a severely traumatic experience and last memory for the family. It can cost a professional thier lisence and even leave the funeral home in an expensive litigation dispute. OH my god !

Bottom line: there is an easy way to avoid all this, simply follow my tip 👇 below!

💀Pro Tip:
1. Use 16oz of Dodge Disrpray per Gallon of a 5% solution
to arrest Tissue Gas
2. Sleep and rest well knowing you won’t walk into a real life nightmare in the morning

ARIZONA-Lylah needs a home FAST….July 1st is going to a shelter :(

Personality- is confident, soulful, obedient, gentle, trusting, protective in the best way. Likes to be near you but not on furniture. Comes from a loving home and well socialized with people and newcomers. Bonds quickly.

She is fully vaccinated/spayed, professionally trained on basic commands, teeth brushing, is house broken, can use a dog door and is excellent on the leash. It is unknown if Lylah is good with other dogs but she acts great on walks. Lylah is great around elderly people and kids and would do well with a patient, confident leader. Lylah loves to be a house hippo but is an athletic dog and would do well with someone who likes to walk, hike or run.

Lylah comes with dog food, a bed, toys and leash and collar. Located in Chandler, Az.
If you would like to have a ready love dog she is it! Easy to care for and even easier to love!! Please share or tag 3 ppl or dog rescues. I cannot post my FB is suspended :(

Meet Lylah. 💔🐾 Chandler AZ

Lylah is a 6-year-old professionally trained European Doberman with the sweetest soul. She’s fully vaccinated, house trained, dog-door trained, walks beautifully on a leash, and has impeccable manners. She loves people, does well with children she’s met, and has been wonderful with the dogs she’s been around in my care.

Her elderly owner was displaced and can no longer care for her. I took Lylah in just days after losing my own Doberman, Cash, but I’m now facing a move and can’t keep her. If we can’t find the right home, she’ll have to be surrendered before July 1. She deserves so much better.

Lylah may also need veterinary care for what appears to be the beginning of a bladder infection. I’ve sold personal items and raised about $100, but I still need $500 to cover her vet bill and transportation.

If you can adopt, foster, donate, or simply share, please help us give Lylah the happy ending she deserves. ❤️

These cases are tough on everyone including the embalmer. Often times discoloration of the face is a serious issue as deceased persons in this situation are often found laying face down. In this position blood 🩸 is allowed to pool in the interstitial tissues which causes capillaries to become clouded.

Dealing with cases where pharmaceuticals 💊 are present in the vascular system can be tricky. I like to use a preinject to help condition the vascular system before adding my preservative chemical aid. Using an accessory chemical/anti coagulant like Adkins Defridge or Hexyethelphenoform will help to push any blood clots through and help with clearing of clouded areas

Pro tip :💀Remember that fluid runs in the path of least resistance and give the chemicals time (15 min or so) to do their job. Massage also helps but utilizing a vascular conditioner is a great way to set yourself up for real success. Very rarely will I add water to my tank to a known case where drugs 💊 are involved. The Dodge “waterless method” is my preferred method to treat these hard cases.

3 ways to use RCI method:

Because the head is the most visible and most important part of the body, it is also the most important to control when injecting. A fail safe way to handle physical discolorations and distortions of the face is to deploy the RCI technique (Restricted Cervical Injection).

Edema, emaciation, jaundice, trauma and medical treatments often impart physical distortions and discolorations. RCI is a method of utilizing both carotid arteries for consistent control of the head. RCI is not only a useful method that offers embalmers control, it is also a wonderful time management strategy.

The idea of utilizing both carotid arteries for injection has been around for a long time but “Big Pharma” has made it even more relevant in today’s prep rooms. As the rise in pharmaceutical use continues our cases get more and more difficult making one point injections less possible (or favorable). This method is a MUST for beginners to learn as it negates possibility for swelling in unwanted areas.

When I get a case that is noticeably compromised on one side of the head with moderate to little defect to the other side, I know I create the best viewing experience for the bereaved by preserving the head with 2 separate solutions. I use RCI to control the amount of fluid injected into the head and choose the strength and drying or “bulking”capacity for each side independently. If done with patience the results are astonishing. I start by injecting the problem area of the head first and let the solution preform at least 15 min before injecting up the other side of the face with a separate solution.

RCI Livor Mortis 💀 Pro Tip: Inject your choice of solution and add 1-3oz to start of Hexyethelphenoform to clear lividity. Add more if needed as you go.

RCI Edema 💀 Pro Tip: Inject a waterless recipe and deliver solution with low pressure

RCI Emaciation 💀 Pro Tip: Inject a “bulking” humectant agent in affected side of the head with high pressure
