Lola was once asked, “Is there an afterlife?” She answered, “I believe there is. We are all spiritual beings, and we are all souls. I believe once we cross that path, we’re looking for the next life, the next thing.”

So you’re off, dear friend, to the “next big thing.” I believe you, but that doesn’t make this any easier. 🖤

I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Ashley “Lola” Bethea. This one hurts.

Lola was one of my very first Instagram followers, and although much of our friendship happened through a screen, the friendship, laughter, encouragement, and love were very real.

Lola was truly one of a kind. She was an innovator who combined her knowledge of cosmetics, biology, chemistry, and mortuary science to create something unlike anything else in our profession. I have always said I ONLY use Lola’s mortuary makeup, LolaSe7en Mortuary Cosmetics and I meant it. Her products were genuinely that good.

But beyond her brilliance, Lola was just… Lola. That smile could light up a room. Her style was FABULOUS, her energy unforgettable, and her hugs were the kind you felt.

She lifted people up. She saw people. She supported people. I will never forget that when asked who she wanted to give a shoutout to, she chose me and called me an amazing trade embalmer, facial reconstructive specialist, and mortuary desairologist. That was Lola. 🖤

I will miss seeing her name pop up on Instagram. I will miss her smile, her energy, and those incredible hugs.

Lola, you were one EXTRAORDINARY 💀🖤 woman with the most compassionate heart.

Thank you for everything you gave to our profession and to all of us who were lucky enough to know you.

Your legacy will live on every time one of us opens that makeup and reaches for the colors you created.

Rest peacefully, beautiful lady. 🖤 You will be missed more than you know.

Some people say that you can talk to your deceased loved ones and they can hear you. I personally believe that they do hear us. I also believe that when we share their pictures on social media or with friends, saying, “Hey, look at my phone. This was my best friend. This is my favorite picture of my mom, my sister, or whoever it is that has passed on,” they are watching us and hearing us.

November 2 is Día de los Mu***os, the Day of the Dead, a tradition centered around remembering and honoring those who have passed away. It is believed that during this time, our departed loved ones can return to visit us. In an effort to guide my beloved Doberman, Cash, home, I’ll be sharing pictures of him and some of my other beloved pets that I’ve lost, helping them find their way home to me.

Cash loved Halloween. I have never had children, but he was definitely a dog who should have been adopted by a family with many children. He couldn’t wait for the kids to come trick or treating. As soon as he saw me pulling out the Halloween decorations and putting his bat wings on, he knew it was his time to shine.

He would literally wait by the door all day long, patiently waiting for the children to arrive. It was one of the most endearing traits he had, and I will always remember how patiently he waited at the door for the first child to show up.

I’ll be looking forward to feeling his little spirit around me on November 2, 2026. 🖤🐾🎃💀

Easy peasy 30 second life changing tip today!!

Simply cut a slit in disposable arm covers to keep 🩸blood and body fluids and ☣️ hazardous chemicals off your skin.

I take every opportunity to lower my exposure levels when possible. This is a simple tip that helps to lower exposure from run off embalming fluid or other bodily fluids and blood 🩸born pathogens.

Here’s how I do it:💀

I cut tiny slits in these arm covers and put my gloves 🧤 on after. This tip is especially handy during autopsy or donor repair, however it works great for regular embalming cases as well.

Pro Tip💀 Start with a tiny/small slit and push your thumb through to prevent creating to large of a slit.

Opening up doors 🚪 and pathways for women is why I’m here! There is a chill in the air! It’s such a nice reprieve from the Arizona heat.

Last night, I attended the “sweater-weather s’mores” event hosted by IFSA here in Idaho. They gifted us all some really cute blankets and mugs. I met some extraordinary women of all ages, some highly seasoned funeral directors and some newbies just entering the field. The energy is just what I needed!

Well, the time has come! 💀⚰️🖤

This will be my one and only speaking engagement in 2026. As many of you know, I’ve been taking some time away from the stage.

There is one reason I agreed to speak at this particular convention: this association values mental health. They value it so much that they’ve hired me to speak about the importance of mental health and the effects of Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder (STSD).

This may be a term you’re not familiar with. Many people have heard of PTSD, but not STSD.

Secondary traumatic stress is similar to PTSD, but it can be brought on by helping others who are experiencing trauma. Funeral directors are especially susceptible to secondary traumatic stress because of the nature of the work we do and the trauma we are exposed to on a regular basis.

This class is rooted in technical embalming, and I’ll be discussing two of the most traumatic cases I have personally worked on throughout my career, cases that stayed with me long after the work was finished and left me carrying the emotional weight of what I had experienced.

I’m really excited to talk about this subject and, more importantly, to share the things that have worked for me as I’ve navigated my own battle with secondary traumatic stress.

But I’m most excited to talk with other women about their experiences.

What happens in the prep room.

What happens across the arrangement table.

And what happens when we go home to our own families after spending the day caring for someone else’s family.

Once our loved ones are cremated or buried, we are left to deal with our emotions. And that can be a difficult cross to bear.

I’m looking forward to opening up this conversation, sharing what I’ve learned, and creating a space where we can talk honestly about the emotional toll of this work.

Because taking care of everyone else doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take care of ourselves, too. ❤️

Use the revolutionary “Adkins” trocar button to lower your exposure from harmful arterial fluid run off/splash and to polish your cranial autopsy repair technique. I lost count of how many times I’d been repairing a cranial autopsy and flip up the scalp to assess whether I am getting distribution of fluid and ended up wearing the embalming fluid.

Anytime I can lower my exposure or make my work area a safer place I take advantage of these opportunities. Years ago when I was serving my internship I had the pleasure of working side by side with Tim Adkins, LFD, LE, inventor and creator of the revolutionary Adkins trocar button. I was lucky to learn many uses for the revolutionary button. Many do not know that it can be strategically used to plug the arteries during cranial autopsy repair and also left in place for permanent sealing power. When screwing the button in place, go EASY so you don’t break the fragile bones in that area. This tip is one of the most useful tips I’ve learned over the years and really find it difficult to use any other trocar button as all its predisessors simply can not hold a candle to this button.

The button tip is sharp and the handle is shaped like a screw driver which gives extra gripping power. If you are still struggling with other trocar buttons using a scalpel to create a stoma, I have one question for you......Why??? These trocar buttons have changed the way I embalm and you will love them too!💉👚💀
