A seven year old child is admitted at the Lautoka Hospital in stable condition after he was allegedly bumped by a vehicle driven by a 28-year-old man.

The incident occurred near Narewa Village, Nadi at around 6pm.

The incident occurred whilst the victim was running after a ball which went on to the main road.

Investigations are ongoing.

Young children should never be allowed to play near busy roads and we again call on parents and guardians to please monitor
and be vigilant of their children’s whereabouts at all times.

FORMER RESORT WORKER COPS 9 YEARS FOR RA**NG GUEST

A 26-year-old male former employee of a resort in the Western Division was sentenced to nine years imprisonment with a nonparole period of seven years and six months for one count of r**e.

The sentencing was at the High Court in Lautoka before Judge Justice Sunil Sharma.

The offender was represented by Legal Aid Commission lawyer Shaheen while Alvin Singh, Sheenal Sw****ka, and Unal Dev Lal appeared for prosecution.

The incident took place on March 6, 2020 and the victim was a 62-year-old caregiver who visited Fiji and checked into the resort where the offender was employed.

On the day of the incident she was invited by the resort management to an evening party and dinner.

The victim returned to her bure at around midnight.

Shortly afterwards the offender went to the victim’s bure where he misrepresented to the victim that he was a security guard and demanded she open the door.

The victim opened the door and the offender proceeded to sit in the lounge and watch an explicit video before asking the victim to get a can of beer for him after which he committed the offence.

In mitigation the defence counsel submitted the offender was married with two children, a chef by profession, first time offender, earning $200 net per week, and the sole breadwinner of his family.

The aggravating factors were the breach of trust, there was some degree of planning by the offender who knew she was alone, and the prevalence of sexual offences on elderly women.

The victim suffered psychological and emotional harm and had become suicidal, however she had undergone psychological assessment, counselling, depression, and trauma treatment as a result of the incident.

“This court will be failing in its duty if a long-term deterrent custodial sentence is not imposed,” Justice Sharma said.

The offender has 30 days to appeal.

OPERATOR DIES AFTER DIGGER SLIPS INTO RIVER

What began as a normal working day for Tomasi Cagilaba, 55, turned fatal when the digger machine he oper­ated flipped into the Navua River along Waiyanitu.

Police said Mr Cagilaba lost con­trol of the digger. It submerged into the Navua River on Friday morning.

He was trapped inside the digger.

Mr Cagilaba was employed by Winstone Aggregates Fiji Ltd and was carrying out gravel extraction from the Navua River at the time of the incident.

Police retrieved his body from the submerged digger at around 12noon on Friday.

Co-worker Christopher Shar­ma said everything happened so quickly on Friday morning.

PNG NATIONAL TO FRONT COURT OVER TEIDAMU ACCIDENT

The 25-year-old student alleged to have caused the death of a 54-year-old man from Barotu, Rakiraki, after losing control of the vehicle he was driving near Teidamu Hill in Lautoka will reappear in the Magistrates Court today.

Accused Rolland Ted Paa, a Papua New Guinea national, appeared in the Lautoka magistrates court yesterday charged with one count of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death, one count of dangerous driving, and one count of failure to comply with provisions for licenses issued in other countries.

Prosecution Divisional Legal Officer Western ASP Mohammed Harif strongly objected to bail.

He informed the court that the accused has been charged with a serious offense and that a life has been lost.

He said the accused is a foreign national and likely to escape if released on bail, and that he might interfere with prosecution witnesses.

The matter will be called for a bail ruling today, as the defense has been asked to provide more information on the accused’s status in the country.
