It’s time we prioritize interventions and universal supports over rewards and punishments.

We need to focus on ACCESSIBILITY over sticker charts or “caught being good” tokens.

Research is coming out that PBIS teaches complacency to civic responsibility and issues of social justice, focuses students on the reward over the process, and increases feelings of shame and lack of competence.

ACCESSIBILITY through UNIVERSAL SUPPORTS needs to be emphasized more than the PBIS framework- ACCESSIBILITY.

After a decade of using PBIS and seeing rewards INCREASE negative behaviors in our most vulnerable students I say it’s time to retire the reward system that is the bedrock of PBIS.

If you are struggling using PBIS in the classroom, either morally or strategically try using Universal Supports!

Universal Supports and Design or Universal Design for Learning is mostly taught to special education teachers.

It is not prioritized in general education as it should be.
And it’s wayyy more than setting “clear expectations”.

There are hundreds of universal support strategies out there that take very little time and energy.

Like:
Using student surveys
Timers
Visuals
Graphic organizers
Sentence/question stems
Total Participation Techniques
Gesturing
I have condensed 200 of these strategies and all of the understanding teachers need to apply each one effectively, AND included an easy to understand behavioral assessment.

I put everything in a Toolkit Bundle and included:

👉Lesson Plans
👉Checklists
👉Graphic organizers and other printable supports
👉 Question and Answer stems
👉 Interviews
👉 and a workshop

It is all in the BUNDLE.

Why are we not teaching the most influential people in the world (teachers) how to form good habits and how to make them stick?
How is that not a part of foundational teaching courses?
We juggle a million things a day. People didn’t stop and think “Oh, I bet knowing how to automate line up and center rotations would be useful.”
Instead we were taught sticker charts and ABA 🙁.
You can use habits to automate organization, routines, and transitions.
I am showing you EXACTLY how to create habits that will stick in the classroom in my new workshop series!
The workshop series features 3 live workshops that give you critical information teachers should have been taught in school.
The first workshop you get is actually a BONUS workshop.
So the series includes 4 workshops, not just 3!
The bonus workshop is all about how to break bad habits, replace them with helpful habits, create habits specifically around organization, routines and transitions, AND even how to automate mental responses to negative student behavior to make you MORE calm and optimistic.

Save time, automate tasks, and sleep easier when you can build good habits in the classroom.
Bad habits seem so easy to form, while creating good habits seem to be impossible.
But creating good habits is easy when you know the secrets to habit formation.
A few secrets are:
Start super duper small
Stack habits on top of behaviors you do everyday
Figure out what is stopping the habit from sticking: time, money, physical effort, mental effort or routine

I’ve seen this come up so often in coaching that I wanted to address it directly, so I wrote a blog post about it!

Check out our latest post, The Power of Habits in the Classroom. This post dives into what we can do when the classroom to establish better habits for ourselves and our students.
