I’m so proud to be an American.
Proud that freedom still flies over front porches and small towns.
Proud that children can run barefoot through backyards without fear because somebody stood in the gap for them.
Proud that generations before us believed this country was worth protecting… even at the cost of their own lives.

But Memorial Day weekend is more than pride.

It is remembrance.

It is the ache behind the freedom.
The silence behind the fireworks.
The folded flags resting in living rooms.
The mothers who still look at old photographs a little too long.
The wives who learned how to sleep alone.
The children who grew up hearing stories instead of making memories.

Somewhere this weekend,
while grills are lit and boats fill the lakes,
there is a family carrying a grief that never fully left.

Because for them,
Memorial Day is not just a date on the calendar.
It is the day they remember the phone call.
The knock at the door.
The last hug.
The sacrifice that changed their family forever.

And still…
they gave.

That kind of sacrifice should humble all of us.

So yes,
be grateful for the long weekend.
Laugh loudly.
Hold your people close.
Wave your flags proudly.

But never forget:
the life we get to live so freely was paid for by someone who never made it home.
