When working with a new client, one of the first questions I ask is "What's your goal for this space?" It helps both myself and my client to get a clearer picture of what we want to accomplish together and what their vision is for the space when we're done. Knowing your goal means you can make defined steps to get there and make regular progress. If you don't know your goal, then you're just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks.

So take some time to determine your goal for the space you want to organize. Really think about what feelings you want to feel (or not feel) when in the room and what problems you have now that you'd like to solve. Next, ask yourself, "what can I do today to get a step closer to my goal?"

Take one small step. Don't try to solve the problem all at once. Don't put off working towards the goal until you have hours of time to do the whole project at once. Don't overwhelm yourself thinking about how much needs to get done in order to get to your goal. Just take one step and enjoy the fact that you're one step closer to your goal than you were yesterday.

Have you always struggled with disorganization? Do you keep thinking you just need to try harder to maintain systems and then you'll get the Pinterest closet of your dreams? Do you keep trying all the "top organizing tips" from the magazines and wondering why it doesn't work for you?

You might be chronically disorganized... and that's ok. The issue isn't you. You are NOT broken. The issue is that your brain works differently so the popular organizing methods just don't work for you.

What you need is a custom system designed for how YOUR brain works. You need to stop trying to change yourself to fit the organizing system and start changing the system to fit you.

If you want different results you need to do different things. Let's try something different together. Let me come into your home and work with you to come up with a system designed for you and your family. Let's accept you as you are and create a system designed around you, not the other way around.

Happy Pride Month and happy International LGBTQIA+ Pride Day to everyone!

Love is love. At our core, we are all humans, and we are all worthy of love and respect.

My favorite tip of all of these? "Less stuff is less drama." It's true and it's the biggest change you can make in order to create a more calming and peaceful home. Decreasing the amount of things you own decreases the amount of work you need to do to maintain your space. Decluttering things you don't use or love can take a literal weight off your shoulders.

Let's take a look at the other tips:
- Use clear containers: With ADHD, you need to see things to remember they exist, so having clear containers is a must.
- Create visual systems: Just like the clear containers, it's important to make your systems very visual so nothing is out of sight, out of mind.
- Set a timer for 5 minutes: Task initiation is a struggle for ADHDers so if you set a very short timer and just do what you can in that time, it is less overwhelming than trying to start a large project with no end time.
- Reward yourself for small wins: A lack of dopamine is a hallmark of ADHD brains so it's important to reward yourself regularly with even the smallest wins. In fact, I often suggest you reward yourself before completing a task because then your brain has the dopamine it needs to do the hard things.
- Label, label, label: This ties into the idea of making sure everything is visible and also taking the cognitive load off your brain to try and remember where everything goes. Decision fatigue sets in fast so if you don't need to decide where something goes because a label just tells you where it should go, then your brain has more energy for more important things.

Which of these tips is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

Hiring a professional organizer might seem like an expense you can't afford, but if you're wasting time every day looking for things and your stress levels are higher because you feel disorganized and overwhelmed, then hiring a professional to help you will save you time. It will save you time during the actual process of organization and creating new systems, as well as save you time in your every day life once you're organized. Time is our most important resource and we can't get it back. Spend it on the things and people you love, not on organizing your home.

Declutter coaching is for you if you feel overwhelmed with your home and you need some guidance but you also know you can physically do the work yourself. If you're the type who likes to DIY but you also want expert guidance to make the process go more quickly and smoothly, then declutter coaching or virtual organizing might be exactly what you're looking for.

No matter where you are, we can meet virtually to discuss problem areas in your home and make a plan to get your space decluttered and organized. I will walk with you step by step to figure out your problem areas, determine what is important to keep and what can be released, then make a plan for new systems to implement that will make it easy for you to maintain your home with minimal time spent tidying and cleaning.

If you think it's impossible for you to finally get organized and stay organized, then please reach out and let me prove you wrong. Organizing is a learned skill and I know with the right methods and support anyone can become organized. I did not become an organized person until college, so I know if this disorganized kid can learn and become a professional organizer, then you can learn too!
