You can find us at our new “home” in Route 11 Antique Mall in Hagerstown, MD, under the trade name DNA (Dave and Nikki Antiques). Dave and Nikki Rouse have been involved in the Antiques and Vintage business in one way or another for over 30 years. From flea markets to antique shows, eBay and Chairish, Etsy and others, we’ve bought and sold in person and online. Some of you may have heard this from me already, but Dave and I had our jewelry case in our Rt. 11 booth robbed on Tuesday morning, June 30. (Yes, it was a locking case, but apparently an employee helping customers over the weekend didn’t re-lock it correctly.) Luckily we were there later on Tuesday, and recognized the theft right away. Also lucky, we had just installed a camera the previous weekend!
The thief came back to our booth dozens of times. It was a slow day, and there was no one to bother him. So over a period of over 45 minutes, he casually cleaned out over $3600 worth of jewelry and rare collectibles. We shared the videos with law enforcement immediately. The mall’s security cameras caught images of his truck in the parking lot, and other antique malls were notified to watch for him. Sure enough, he hit SEVERAL other antique shops between us and Bedford, PA!
Thanks to the Sheriff’s Deputy we’ve been working with, the thief has been identified (not to me), and the Sheriff’s office requested a warrant. Instead, the Maryland court sent a “Criminal Summons”, because it wasn’t a “violent crime”. A Criminal summons is an invitation to come to court to face charges. He will be out and about until his court date. (Don’t get me started!)
But now I am free to share his pictures. If he is brazen enough to stay around for 45 minutes as he clears out a jewelry case, I’ll be surprised if he isn’t also brazen enough to continue his entrepreneurial venture right up until he is actually arrested and put away. Between us and the other antique malls, he has stolen more than $10k of inventory. That is a felony!
If you’re a shopper or a store owner, or a booth vendor, this is your warning! Stay alert and keep an eye out. Call the police immediately if you see him. If his cargo shorts pockets are bulging, you can be pretty sure it’s not because he’s happy to see you.

If you haven’t met yet, let me introduce you to The Yellow Kid! I’ve had this little doll for a couple of years now, and he is currently sitting in a front booth across from the check out counter at Route 11 Antique Mall, Hagerstown, MD.
Richard Outcault’s Hogan’s Alley comic introduced the world to the lovable Mickey Dugan, a bald, snaggle-toothed little boy in an over-sized yellow shirt, living in an alley typical of the slums in New York City at the turn of the 19th/20th century. The first Hogan’s Alley was filled with equally odd characters, mostly other children, but Mickey’s , ragged, peculiar ghetto slang was printed on his shirt, leading to the first “speech balloon”, and frequently lampooned advertising billboards and political issues of the day. These sensationalist commentaries became labeled “Yellow Journalism”.
Although the comic strip ended in 1897, the popularity of The Yellow Kid led to a long line of popular products, from chewing gum to to***co and household objects. One of the longer lasting collectibles was a collectible “Scrip” card for kids, where they could send in their collected cards no later than December of 1933 to get...a dollar!
This doll is from just around 1900, made of composition, with moving joints and a very fragile crepe paper shirt. I have only seen one other like it, in a photograph of a museum collection. Our little cutie (he is NOT scary or haunted, he told me himself!) is available for sale. One Scrip card is included in the sale.
