Montessori Day Academy of Hartsville

Montessori Day Academy of Hartsville Montessori Day Academy of Hartsville serves children ages six weeks to six years in Hartsville, SC, and surrounding communities.

Montessori Day Academy of Hartsville (MDAH) is a private, independent education institution that practices the Montessori Method of learning. We are ABC Quality Certified and accept SC Childcare Vouchers. The carefully developed curriculum is structured based on the different developmental stages of the child; multi-age classrooms help children learn to value curiosity and discovery, as well as de

velop independence and critical thinking skills through respect, interaction, and cooperation with others. Classrooms boast a low student to teacher ratio, in which teachers are learning guides who foster non-competitive, creative learning environments where students can work and explore at their own paces. MDAH serves children from ages six weeks to six years; at all ages and all times of the day, they will be engaged in the pursuit of knowledge based on the philosophies of the Montessori Method. The Montessori way of learning is a whole child approach; children choose their own paths for learning, working with sensory activities that encourage them to develop concrete understanding from abstract concepts. Children are also encouraged to use their whole bodies to learn, in stark contrast to the setting of a traditional classroom. Similarly, teachers are guides in a Montessori classroom. Work in the classroom has built-in error control, meaning students can see when errors are made and can work independently to discover answers. Montessori philosophy believes when teachers give answers instead of guide children to self-discovery it steals from them the wonder of learning.

One of the most beautiful things about working with children is seeing growth happen in real time.
Sometimes it shows up in a big milestone.

Sometimes it shows up in something small — a new word, a brave choice, a kind moment, a little burst of independence.

These moments can pass quickly if we’re not paying attention, but they are often where the magic lives.
Children are learning all the time, even in ways we don’t always expect.

Today we mark the anniversary of a pivotal moment in the history of education: the opening of the first Casa dei Bambini on January 6, 1907.

In the San Lorenzo district of Rome, Dr. Maria Montessori was invited to oversee a small group of children who had previously been overlooked by the educational system. What emerged from this modest beginning was not simply a classroom, but a profound shift in how we understand childhood, learning, and human potential.

Within the walls of that first Children’s House, Montessori observed something remarkable. When children were offered freedom within a carefully prepared environment, meaningful work, and deep respect for their developmental needs, they revealed concentration, independence, and joy in learning that challenged long-held assumptions about education. These observations became the foundation of what would grow into the Montessori approach, an approach grounded not in theory alone, but in careful scientific observation of the child.

More than a century later, the legacy of the Casa dei Bambini continues to shape classrooms across the world. Its influence reaches far beyond materials or methods. It reminds us that education is ultimately an act of trust, trust in the child’s innate drive to learn, to contribute, and to become.

As we reflect on this anniversary, we are invited to return to the essence of Montessori’s work, to observe more closely, to prepare environments with intention, and to honour the child as an active participant in their own development.

From a single room in Rome to a global movement, it all began with a simple yet radical idea: follow the child.

You show up every day—with love, patience, and energy for your little one. But here’s your gentle reminder: you matter, too.
Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s how you refuel to keep doing the most important job in the world.

🧘‍♀️ Even 5 quiet minutes. A hot coffee. A deep breath. Saying “no” when you need to.
It all counts.
We see you. We support you. We’re here for you.
💬 What’s one small way you’ll care for you this week?
