When I started making dice, I did so because they bring me joy. Tiny physical embodiments of chance or possibility. But a recent commission showed me that this art form can be so much more.
A client asked if I would be willing to undertake an unusual commission. I said yes, of course, and asked for more info. My client's beloved cat had passed away and she wanted something done with dice as a sort of memorial. She wanted to have some of the cat's fur used as inclusions in the dice. With substantial collaboration, I set to work on a die that might do this important task justice.
This d20 is 50mm, done mostly in clear resin. The numbers are offset to the corners to ensure a good view of the center - a resin heart containing the fur. The numbers are painted black, white, and reddish-brown - the same colors in the calico fur. The 20 face is a scan of the cat's actual paw print, painted in green to match its eyes.
I've shed tears for this project, out of love for my own departed pets and for my client's grief. But now, those special memories have physical form.
