The Closet of the Greater Herndon Area

The Closet of the Greater Herndon Area Herndon's thrift shop that gives back! We are temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 virus. We will re-open when the conditions allow us.
The Closet began operations in 1974 and has grown steadily with its focus on helping low-income families, immigrants and budget-conscious shoppers find quality clothing and household goods at affordable prices. We receive no government funding. We are open for sales on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The Closet is a nonprofit thrift shop founded by local churchwomen in response to a growing need in the community. Many churches had small “clothes closets” but the women felt a combined operation would better serve the needy, in particular the growing Vietnamese refugee community. The Closet began operations in 1974 and has grown steadily with its focus on helping low-income families, immigrants and budget-conscious shoppers find quality clothing and household goods at affordable prices. We receive no government funding. The store has been located at 845 Station Street since 2000. It is open for sales on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. In addition to its low prices, high quality goods, and merchandise variety, The Closet helps needy individuals referred by local social service agencies. We have given away more than $55,000-$65,000 worth of clothing and shoes annually in recent years. Since its inception, The Closet has donated over $2.5 million in grants to local charities, including $350,000 in college scholarships. The Closet delivers its excess goods to communities in the Shenandoah Valley, where they are distributed free of charge to those who need a helping hand.

Mission: A thrift shop that sells donated items and donates its net revenue to various charities and gives scholarships to local high schools that choose the recipients

The temporary closure continues at The Closet. The closure applies to both the retail sales floor and the donation intake area. We will re-evaluate our status once the community spread of the coronavirus is no longer a serious concern. We look forward to the day we reopen our doors.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of our former manager, Aaron Sawyer, who succumbed to Covid-19 on April 4, 2020 in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. Aaron suffered a stroke in December 2017 and had moved to New Jersey to be closer to family during his recovery. Aaron had just turned 70 on April 2, 2020.

Aaron greeted Closet shoppers with a big smile, assured them that “if it’s not here today, it’s on the way” and in general was the face of The Closet to the community for well over a decade. He joined the staff as cashier and assistant manager in 2002, became manager in 2005, and left in August 2017. He always had a heart for those in need, slipping customers money when they were short of cash and visiting them in the hospital when they were sick. The Closet’s mission of service to the community was always foremost in his mind.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Aaron’s family.

We are forever grateful for the support we receive from the community for donations, volunteers, and shoppers. We are sad to have to take this action, but we feel it is a prudent measure to take to help slow the spread of the coronavirus and insure the health and safety of our employees, volunteers, and shoppers.

Very glad to hear about your new safety precautions, particularly the UV sterilization, but you need to temperature-check ALL people coming in - not just the staff and volunteers. Just takes one sick person coming in to potentially get everyone there sick.
The Closet has a booth in the Business Expo area at the Herndon Festival on June 1st and 2nd. Come check it out!
I heard yesterday that you no longer accept stuffed toys, no matter how new or clean? :( Why is that? If people can't donate stuffed toys to a charity thrift shop, where would one donate them?
