Nā wāhine kīhene pua 🦋

Born on September 2, 1838, at the base of Punchbowl on Oʻahu, Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaʻeha was destined to carry the weight of a changing nation.

She penned many mele and translated the Kumulipo. She showed the world that true sovereignty lives in the spirit and not the crown.

Though her reign was stolen by an illegal overthrow in 1893, and she was unjustly imprisoned in her own palace, her spirit refused to be locked away. She chose peace over bloodshed to save her lāhui.

Today, we honor a monarch whose crown was stolen, but whose royal legacy remained entirely unbreakable. Through her grace, resilience, hope and aloha she told us as a lāhui to be ‘onipa’a.
