Anna Mangin was a Black inventor and educator who revolutionized baking with her 1891 patent for the pastry fork.

At a time when household tools were limited and baking was a labor-intensive task, Mangin’s invention made mixing butter and flour more efficient, reducing the strain of traditional methods. Her pastry fork, which resembled a modern dough blender, was designed to streamline the process and improve consistency in baking—a small but impactful innovation in culinary history.

Beyond her invention, Mangin was also a dedicated educator, advocating for the importance of domestic sciences in women’s education. Her work highlighted the ingenuity of Black women in an era when their contributions were often overlooked or unrecognized.

Her legacy serves as a reminder of the countless Black inventors whose innovations have shaped everyday life.
