Patty Greene (Sarah Jessica Parker) is clever and seemingly well-adjusted, but feels awkward and like a social misfit. Patty's close friend Lauren Hutchinson (Amy Linker) constantly desires to be in with the "in" crowd, and the series' episodes often revolve around her dragging Patty into various schemes in attempts to make them both more popular.
Square Pegs was canceled primarily due to low ratings, despite its cult following, but production was also plagued by rumors and reports of rampant drug use, ego clashes, and general chaos on set, creating a difficult environment that led to its short run. Creator Anne Beatts blamed the network's scheduling and the dominance of rival shows, while later reports highlighted the substance abuse issues that undermined the promising series.
