Le Ohana was made to support community. As part of our launch, Le Ohana will donate a portion of the proceeds from our 10 foundational patterns to the NALU Studies program. Rooted in values like malama, lokahi, and laulima, programs like NALU give ‘opio a chance to succeed. It has certainly made a difference to me. Mahalo nui loa for the mentorship and investment in my future.

Dad sparked a curiosity that has played an integral part of my life. He loved to photograph native plants and animals, and always chased a photo of the endemic I’iwi. He shared his passion for the natural world with us at a very young age and took us on our first adventures. It carries on to my keiki as they grow up, trading theme park experiences with national park explorations. I hope you have a chance to chase your I’iwi.

In the style of my brother, these prints are a poi bowl of my little’s love of cats (popoki), my love of poke, and a dash of the local flavor that my mom’s family adds. Eepo, who is 90-something year old and still drives, loved to wear the Crazy Shirt cats when we were little. Throwing it altogether makes “Spicy Po-poke” and “Limu Po-poke”, two poke classics.

Mom loved local music (although Lionel Ritchie was cool too). Inspired by my music loving mama, and my own ‘opihi (limpet) and he’e (octopus) duo. I hope you can stick with your littles in a tidepool for a moment. There is much to be discovered. 🙂

Kahuli was inspired by the incredible work done by a research and conservation team that I worked for at the university. A small research lab studying land snails in Hawaii inspired me to seek a career in environmental conservation. The lab took me on the most amazing adventures to Hawaiian cloud forests, giant tree ferns, and hidden treasures. The people there were passionate and compassionate, and understood that stewardship was a great and necessary responsibility.

Teachers and mentors make a whole world of difference. Mine's always told me to "put on my thinking caps" and figure it out. The best lessons never put me on top of the academic learning curve, but they gave me grit and a good mind for problem solving. Hopefully everyone can find a good teacher or a mentor to guide them along the way. These thinking caps were inspired by some memorable teachers in my life, and the funny things that made them memorable.

“One Sly Mongoose”: Everyone at my local high school knew and loved a very memorable teacher with a very memorable saying. You knew that you were special if she deemed you "one sly mongoose!" Learning is always a little easier when you can play a little.

“Wow Lau Lau!”: The warmest music teacher at my middle school made every day with her the best day ever. She marveled in all of her students’ little wins and made everyone feel like a champ. She made “Wow lau lau!” known to me long before Stephanie Lum did, and her little phrase would bring about the biggest changes.

“Baby Bun Bao”: Did you know that learning never stops? I am so lucky to have found a partner in crime that still teaches things to me today. When pregnant with my first little, he very appropriately deemed me “the Bun Bao” (Vietnamese word for a steamed manapua). When she was born, she naturally became “the Baby Bun Bao”, and my greatest lesson in life was learned.
