On an evening in the fall of 1952, a group of children in the town of Flatwoods, WV were playing outside. Suddenly, they saw a glowing object streak through the sky overhead and watched as the mysterious object landed on a farm nearby. The children ran home to tell their mother what they had seen.
Deciding to investigate further, the children’s mother, mother’s cousin and other local children, who also became curious, went in search of whatever it could be - a crashed airplane, perhaps?
When the group reached a vantage point on the farm near the object, they reported seeing a glowing red light. A green, fog like mist, that made it difficult to breathe, filled the air and later caused some of them to feel ill. When the group shined a flashlight in the direction of the glowing light, what they saw scared them into running away.
Now part of folklore, the reports of what that group witnessed were, at the time, used to create a drawing of the creature they all saw that evening. And it was their accounts that inspired us to create our Flatwoods Monster patch - complete with jeweled eyes as a nod to the glowing eyes the creature was said to possess.
