Here is an alteration I did recently. My customer needed some fabric taken in at the armpits and shoulders. There was boning in the sides of the dress that we decided I would remove as well. After I made these alterations, she decided she wanted the dress a little shorter, so I cut off the amount she requested and re-hemmed the dress. I wish I had gotten a better picture of the hem of the dress afterwards. I think it turned out really well for her

I’m making sewing patterns for a line of dresses. I drafted a pattern, but it’s unfinished and it needs to be tested. There’s a lot that goes into pattern making- a lot of time and a lot of effort, and it entails working with either a pattern testing model or a dress form. From the patterns, I’ll create samples of the patterns, which will be fully finished garments to show the look and the quality. Because I want my sample dresses to be the middle size of the size range I’m going to offer, I need a pattern testing model that’s within that middle number of my whole intended size range. I’m thinking a pattern testing model for my project could be anywhere from size 16-18, to get an accurate fit for my dresses. Don’t be confused in thinking that that size will be the only size I’ll make; on the contrary, I’ll be making these dresses to order, and they’ll fit the customers individual measurements by them selecting their closest size in my size range, and then requesting fit modifications for their body before I make the dress. So, if you’re interested and could spend a day with me in my sewing room, I’d soo appreciate it🤞I’m making dresses for, I would say, ages 25+, who want something a little nicer to wear, who want an investment piece made of natural fibers, instead of a 200-300$ polyester dress that will probably be sweaty. I’m going to include some nicer dresses and some more casual dresses. I’ve always loved the idea of a capsule wardrobe, having a small selection of clothes you’ve worn over and over and see work best for you. These dresses are something that the buyer is going to wear over and over and over because it’s comfortable and beautiful on their body. I’m going to leave room for alterations in the dresses, so that they can be worn for years. I’m doing classic styles, I think it’s more sustainable and less wasteful to create a modern look from classic styles than it is to follow trends. Maybe a should make a poll in my story asking what you want in a dress as women 25 and older 🤔 Seriously, any suggestions you have as a woman who shops for clothes, can be sent to me and I will read them lol.

Just finished altering 2 gorgeous dresses for a bridesmaid. She came last week for a consultation; she wanted the first dress shortened by 4 3/4 inches. She brought me long satin ties and asked me to stitch them into bows and then stitch them onto the straps. During our consultation, we noticed her straps were a bit too long, and it was making the dress loose at the armpits. She wanted the second dress to be shortened by 4 1/2 inches. She came for her follow-up appointment today, tried on the dresses, and both dresses fit better. The lengths of the dresses were a lot better after I shortened them; we didn’t want her to be stepping on the dresses at the weddings. We both forgot to get photos of her in the dresses because we were focused, but both dresses fit so well after the alterations! That tiered dress is my favorite ✨ I’m glad and grateful that she trusted me with her dresses! Getting your clothes altered, especially for a special event like a wedding, can make you feel a lot more confident in what you’re wearing, so you can just focus on having a good time! Services are still 18$/hr until October 1, when they will be start being 20$/hr (this will not affect the customer whom I’ve already agreed to work with. They will be charged 18$/hr, regardless of whether their service is completed by October 1st or not.

Let me talk more about why I’m calling my collection I’m showing in November “Construction”. First of all, the reasons were because I wanted the clothes to have good construction, and I started calling it “Construction” because I’m making all these clothes by hand, even dyeing fabric myself to get the colors I want. I think that after the show, I want to really start (tediously) building a personal library of self drafted patterns that I can use over and over again to create variations of designs. I think this would be a good way to expand my seamstress/clothing repair services into a made-to-order model. I know that I love to design for women, that designing specifically for men probably isnt my thing (not to say a man can’t wear clothes I make, bc they can). Having this huge index of patterns at my personal disposal will be monumental and take a very long time to build for sure, but having patterns that I can do variations of could save potential future clients who want a dress made-to-order many dollars that it would cost for me to draft an entirely new pattern for them. In conclusion, “Construction” is going to be experimental and I am thinking about expanding Hazel (in the future) into a made-to-order business model (possibly for dresses) which would be a one-woman-show run by moi. Tell me what you think below if you feel like it ⬇️❤️

A note on pricing: I have been charging my standard 18$/hr since this is my first year of doing this professionally and having my social media accounts for seamstress work. However, I wanted to inform all my clients or those who may want a service in the future that my standard dollar-an-hour rate will be raised starting October 1; though I don’t have a set price determined yet, I will be updating on that soon. That gives some time where services are still 18$/hr though! All orders for services I’ve already accepted now are staying at the rate of 18$/hr ❤️ I think you all should also know my goal that I would like to get to a point in the future where I accept custom requests for clothing made to fit a specific client; but at this time I am not necessarily accepting custom made clothing requests. By all means though, please do keep bringing me your clothes that need repairs, need alterations, need hemming, need taken in or taken out, etc! Thank you so much to my clients!
