Óbidos, Portugal
The phrase "fit for a queen" is spot on for Óbidos. For centuries, this beautiful little gem was presented as a wedding gift to Portuguese queens. The walled hill town still exudes the same charisma that caught Queen Isabel's eye in the 13th century (thus prompting her husband to just gift it to her).

Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog may have been led to believe that Sonic (and all other hedgehogs) can’t swim, but it turns out that real life hedgehogs are strong paddlers in natural bodies of water. Nocturnal creatures, hedgehogs can run and swim up to 2km a night in search of food. While they are good swimmers, hedgehogs need an accessible ledge to get in and out of the water, making creeks and rivers great places for a hedgehog pool party, but man-made swimming pools or ponds may have ledges that are too hard for hedgehogs to climb – keep an eye for any hedgehogs in trouble if you have a pool they might venture into.

In many places around the world, rivers are threatened by intensive farmland or urban infrastructure that extends to the water's edge. This encroachment restricts the dynamic meandering of the rivers and removes. But when rivers are allowed space to ebb and flow, they can benefit the people and wildlife living nearby, whilst also building resilience to extreme pressures such as climate change.

A group of marine mammals that also depend on females hunting together are orca, whose family groups – called pods –are mostly matriarchal. It’s the eldest females in these groups that impress, as an example of females that are valuable beyond their reproductive ability. In orca social groups, menopausal females play an essential role as leaders to find salmon foraging grounds, with the effect exaggerated in years of low salmon abundance4. Researchers believe that the ecological knowledge of these wise orca is beneficial to successive generations, which may explain why females live to 90 years old despite not reproducing past around 40 years.

Not only a majestic bird, the grey-headed albatross is a literal a world record holder! In 2003, The Guinness Book of Records gave them the title of world’s fastest horizontal flier. With a colossal wingspan of 2.2m, they can fly at speeds of up to 127km per hour and can circumnavigate the globe in just a little over a month.

Although they spend most of their life at sea, the grey-headed albatross return to land to breed. Parents build cone shaped nests out of mud and grass, on slopes or cliffs in preparation for the single egg females lay each October. Mum and dad take turns incubating the egg, although the majority of this task will be performed by the male. After hatching, chicks spend four and a half months on land, before taking flight and spending its first six to seven years at sea. When these hatchlings finally return to land, they return to the same colony where they were born.

Foam polystyrene has long been a popular choice for packaging and insulation because it’s cheap and 95% air.1 But it’s not particularly good for the planet. Polystyrene is made from petroleum, is difficult to recycle, and can take centuries to decompose. However, there’s a neat solution that cinema-goers have been enjoying for years: popcorn. Researchers at Germany’s University of Göttingen have developed a ‘granulated’ popcorn made from the inedible byproducts of cornflake production.2 Using different moulds, the corn can be turned into various packaging materials, including the packing beads used to transport delicate items in the post. When finished with, it can be reused, cut, shredded or composted. The only thing you can’t do, it appears, is eat it.

In those days, the term ‘electrician’ was used to describe the scientists who were interested in electrical experimentation. As part of their investigations, electricians collected electrical charges in Leyden jars (literally glass jars with metal lining), which occasionally gave them nasty shocks. The scientists were focused on trying to prove the existence of atmospheric electricity.
