In June of 2012, my friend Nichols St. Louis and I traveled to Rwanda to volunteer at the Noel Orphanage in Gysenyi. The trip's impact on my life cannot be easily explained. Nearly 600 children were living in the orphanage and though the facility is run by some truly caring people they are tremendously understaffed and lacking in access to food, clothing, and education. Su

rprisingly the spirit of these children is off the charts. Most people know of Rwanda because of the 1994 genocide and so I think they would be surprised to hear that the country has done a remarkable job of healing its wounds and turning towards the future with a surprising measure of optimism. The government has moved to eliminate the labels associated with a tribal identity and successfully rallied the country under the unifying Rwandan banner. The generosity and kindness of the people were the two things that stood out most to me on my visit. That said, many of the children in Rwandan orphanages are there as a result of the genocide when 800,000 people were killed (500,00 over a 100 day period). Eighteen years after the genocide the number of young orphans has increased, but now as a consequence of AIDS and poverty. While we were there we decided to visit Sonrise School in Musanze, about 2 hours away. Sonrise is one of the top boarding schools in Rwanda and offers a clean living environment and structured classes and the cost by U.S. standards is ridiculously low. After the tour of the school we thought we should work on getting some of the children out of the orphanage and into this wonderful place to give them an opportunity to pursue what everyone deserves... a chance to become whatever they want to be... without the limits that they have at the orphanage. Now there goal has expanded to issues affecting neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The violence there has claimed nearly 8 Million lives since 1996. Violence against women is a particular scourge with 1,100 women raped every day in the country. WAL is working to build a center in Goma city that will house over 200 orphans, ex-child soldiers, and rape victims.

Last week (former Gold medalist and GB boxer) hosted the UK premiere of Fight Like A Girl () . Last night she showed me just how alive the story of our film is in the work she does.
At The Fight Back — a boxing tournament and fundraiser for FIGHT FORWARD ( ) — I heard women who had finished the program speak of how Fight Forward had transformed their lives, then watched them step into the ring with a confidence that embodied their slogan of “Triumph over trauma”
I kept thinking of Kibomango and his women’s club in Congo. Different countries, different journeys - Same truth.
Courage. Resilience. Transformation.
Fight Forward’s mission is to help 100,000 survivors of abuse rebuild their lives through boxing and ther**eutic programs across London. After last night, I have no doubt they’ll get there.

Still a long way to go to get across the finish line But we managed to get supplies to Rebecca and the kids.
Looks like this is going to take a bit longer than I had hoped.
And this outbreak looks to be around a lot longer than it has in the past.
But these kids are resilient as hell - so we will make this happen!

In the aftermath of losing Philemon this week, I have been thinking constantly about our home in Goma and what these children truly need moving forward.

For years, the priority has been survival. Keeping children fed. Keeping them in school. Keeping them safe amid war, displacement, food insecurity, disease outbreaks, and ongoing instability in eastern Congo. The compound itself evolved over time as more vulnerable children arrived. Structures were added as resources allowed. Emergency solutions slowly became long-term living conditions.
Then in January 2025, fighting in Goma damaged parts of the orphanage compound itself.

Since then, we have worked to stabilize and protect the property, including building a ten-foot volcanic stone wall around the entire compound. But inside those walls, there is still enormous work to do.

Too many children are still sleeping on floors or sharing beds. The electrical system remains unreliable. Parts of the roof leak during heavy rains. Sanitation infrastructure is limited. The unfinished dormitory wing was never completed after funding ran out. The small courtyard inside the compound now has to function as gathering space, garden, play area, and food production zone all at once.
At the same time, eastern Congo continues to face overlapping crises. Much of the surrounding region remains under rebel control. Food insecurity continues to worsen. Displacement remains constant. And now a renewed Ebola outbreak in neighboring Ituri Province has added another layer of fear and instability across the east.

Philemon’s death has made me realize with even greater urgency that survival alone is not enough. These children deserve a real home.

Very sad news from our children’s home in Congo.
One of our children, Philemon, died this morning. He was 9 years old.

He went to sleep last night showing symptoms of malaria and never woke up. His brothers and sisters found him beside them this morning, believing he was still asleep.

Malaria is treatable. But when the fever becomes severe, treatment cannot wait. Rebecca did not take him to the clinic because she did not want to burden me. They know how difficult things have been financially for the organization and how much stress we have been under trying to keep everything afloat. I am so sick that they worried more about protecting me from another f-ing expense than getting Philemon medical care.

It is hard to process the contrast of this work sometimes. One day we are celebrating Schadrack graduating from a private university in the United States with a mathematics degree and job opportunities in Silicon Valley. The next day, a 9-year-old boy dies because we did not get him to a f-ing local clinic in eastern Congo in time. I will probably wake up tomorrow with the usual determination it takes to move this organization forward but its times like these that I really question if can do this much longer.

This is the reality these children are still living in every day. Fragile systems. Delayed care. Decisions made out of fear of cost. And consequences that cannot be undone.

Last night in Kinshasa we were honored to present the Congolese premiere of Fight Like A Girl as part of the International Women’s Day program.

Our sincere thanks to the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and to all the partners who made this event possible.

We are especially grateful to Mme Chantal Mulop, Presidential Coordinator for Youth and the Fight Against Violence Against Women, who delivered a powerful and moving speech about the film and spoke about the importance of sharing this story.

During the evening we also presented a short film about the making of Fight Like A Girl, along with a preview of the ongoing documentary following the women’s boxing team.

The night included a tribute to the team’s beloved coach Kibomango, who was killed in the conflict in eastern Congo last year.

The event was dedicated to resilience, emancipation, and dignity—and to the extraordinary strength of Congolese women.

One year ago this week, Kibomango was killed.

He spent his life training women who had survived sexual violence and kids who had been living on the street. He used boxing to give them structure, confidence, and a way to reclaim control over their own bodies and futures.

The gym wasn’t about medals. It was about discipline, stability, and learning how to stand your ground again.

His work is still visible in every fighter he trained and every life he helped redirect. We keep going because that is what he taught us to do.
