Stull, Kansas. A ghost town just west of Lawrence, founded in the 1850s by six families who probably had no idea what they were sitting on.
For over a century, stories swirled...a witch hanged from a pine tree, a toddler who burned to death in his father's field, a man found hanging from a tree on a road that used to be called Devil's Road before someone quietly renamed it in the 1990s.
None of it made print until 1974, when the University of Kansas student newspaper ran a story claiming Stull Cemetery was one of the seven gateways to Hell on earth and that the Devil himself appeared there twice a year. Halloween. And the vernal equinox.
Inside the old limestone church, witnesses said a hidden staircase descended into the abyss. Those who found it felt an unseen force pulling them down. And despite having no roof no rain ever fell inside those walls.
The church was demolished overnight in 2002. No one claimed responsibility. The staircase was never found.
The Devil reportedly still visits to see the grave of a witch with whom he had a child. That child materializes in the surrounding woods. In the form of a werewolf.
