Democracy is beautiful in theory.

Then the results come in, and suddenly you remember that “the people” includes everyone from your favorite neighbor to the guy who does reply-all to church emails.

That’s when Mencken starts sounding less like a cynic and more like a weather report.

Winston Churchill had a gift for making uncomfortable truths sound both obvious and slightly insulting.

Hard to argue with that one.

Story Behind the Plate: Spectacled Caiman & Coral Snake

This is the one that proves Merian was not just here for flowers and butterflies.
A spectacled caiman.
A false coral snake.
One very tense reptile situation.

It feels less like a botanical illustration and more like someone opened a 1700s field notebook and found the page labeled: “Well, that escalated.”

Merian traveled to Suriname to study insects, but she paid attention to the whole living world around them — reptiles, amphibians, spiders, plants, and all the uncomfortable little dramas happening in the margins.

That is why this design stands out in the Metamorphosis Collection. It is not soft. It is not delicate. It is old natural history with teeth.

Literally.

It gives the collection a little bite, which honestly it needed.

Detail / Design Spotlight
The design spotlight here is movement. The caiman’s body, the snake’s curve, the open tension between predator and prey — it gives the shirt a stronger graphic silhouette than the softer botanical plates. This is the “wait, what is on your shirt?” design.

At first glance, it’s a bee. A very dramatic bee, sure. A bee with wings spread like it has just kicked open the saloon doors and announced itself.

But this design has a better backstory than “cool bug on a shirt.”

This Orchid Bee comes from the world of Maria Sibylla Merian, one of the great natural history artists of the 1600s and early 1700s. Merian wasn’t just painting pretty insects for decoration. She was studying them, watching them, documenting how they lived, changed, fed, transformed, and interacted with the plants around them. Which, for her time, was a little wild.

While a lot of people were still treating insects like tiny spontaneous nuisances that simply appeared out of nowhere, Merian was out there saying, “Nope. Watch closely. There’s a whole story happening here.” That’s the spirit behind this shirt.

The Orchid Bee is bold, strange, beautiful, and just a little intense. It looks like nature designed it after drinking too much coffee and deciding subtlety was overrated. And honestly? Respect.

Part science history, part vintage naturalist art, part “yes, I do have excellent taste in obscure insects.”

The road had been long. Dusty boots. Empty provisions. One more disappointing loaf purchased from a village baker who clearly considered "sourdough" to be little more than a marketing term.

Just as our weary traveler was beginning to lose hope, she spotted a weathered sign gently swinging in the afternoon breeze:

**STARTER CULTURE APOTHECARY**

Curiosity got the better of her.

The door creaked open. Inside, shelves stretched from floor to ceiling. Glass jars bubbled quietly. Sacks of flour lined the walls. Strange handwritten labels hung from every corner.

A cheerful shopkeeper appeared from behind the counter. "Welcome," he said. "What brings you to the Apothecary?"

"I seek better bread."

The shopkeeper nodded solemnly. "A common affliction." He gestured toward the shelves. "We carry only the finest wild yeast cultures. Freshly milled flour. Bannetons. Dough scrapers. Fermentation vessels. Patience. Quite a lot of patience, actually."

"And does it work?" she asked.

The old baker smiled. "Eventually."

Three days later, after feeding, folding, waiting, feeding again, waiting some more, questioning every life choice that led her here, and waiting yet again...

She pulled a golden loaf from the oven. The crust crackled. The crumb was open. The flavor was magnificent.

The shopkeeper, naturally, was nowhere to be found.

Some say the Starter Culture Apothecary only appears to those who are ready to learn that great bread cannot be rushed. Others say it's just where sourdough people spend entirely too much time and money. Either way, the sign still swings in the breeze.

And business is apparently quite good.

If you’ve ever asked me “How’s it going?” or “How are you doing?” there’s a pretty good chance I answered:

"Best day ever!"

I say it to everybody. All the time.

And no, every day is not actually the best day ever. Some days are frustrating. Some days are exhausting. Some days you get punched in the mouth by life before breakfast.

But I really do believe there’s something powerful about refusing to let a bad day decide what kind of person you’re going to be. Call it radical optimism. Call it stubbornness. Call it mildly delusional emotional judo.

But my approach is pretty simple:
Show up like the day is worth something.
Act like you’re glad to be here.
Move forward no matter what.
Find the funny part if you can.
And if the day has been lousy so far, good news — there’s still time to turn it around.

I don’t always do this perfectly. Not even close. But this is genuinely how I try to move through life.

So yeah, I made the shirt.

Best Day Ever.

Not because everything is perfect. Because I refuse to hand the day over without a fight.

Some quotes age politely. This one did not.

H.L. Mencken wrote this line more than a century ago, and it still feels like it just walked out of a comment section with a cigarette and a bad attitude.

“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”

Mencken was a journalist, critic, and professional irritant — the kind of writer who didn’t seem especially interested in making anyone feel better. He had a sharp eye for politics, public opinion, and the strange things people convince themselves they want.

That’s why this quote works so well on a shirt. It’s funny, but not exactly cheerful. It’s cynical, but not empty. It has that old newspaper-column bite: short, dry, and just uncomfortable enough to keep being relevant.

I don’t think you have to agree with Mencken on everything to appreciate the line. You just have to have lived through an election cycle.

This pineapple design from the Metamorphosis Collection has a better story than I expected.

Maria Sibylla Merian had a memorable description of pineapple. In her notes, she described the flavor like tasting grapes, apricots, red currants, apples, and pears all at once — which is honestly a pretty solid fruit review for 1705. 😄

But the plate is not just “pretty pineapple with butterflies.”

Merian was interested in how insects interacted with plants, food, and the world around them. This pineapple wasn’t just decoration. It was a little ecosystem — fruit, butterflies, caterpillars, tiny insects, sweetness, decay, and all the small things attracted to it.

That’s what makes these old natural history illustrations so interesting to me. They look elegant from a distance, but the longer you look, the more strange little details show up.

For the shirt, I cleaned up the original artwork, removed the background, and kept the pineapple, butterflies, caterpillar, and insect details as the focus. The goal was wearable natural history — not just an old book image dropped onto fabric.

Also, yes, we now have a pineapple bug shirt. That seems to be where life has taken us. 😄
