On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the First World War came to an end. The day was labeled Armistice Day--now celebrated as Veterans Day. On Veterans Day, we take time to recognize and celebrate those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We honor the commitment, bravery, and sacrifices of veterans and their families in service to the nation and the ideals upon which our country continues to build. We are proud to celebrate and honor those among us at Orvis who have served, and to support through partnership the work being done in communities around the country to serve veterans through the lens of fly fishing.

It's tough to beat the excitement of walking up behind a locked-up pointer in a field of cut corn or flushing ruffed grouse in a hardwood forest. And we'll take busting clays at the local range over golf any day. With more than 50 years of sharing the art of wingshooting, Orvis has a school to help you become a better shotgunner. “School of Fish” has won BEST SHORT FILM at Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival

Hit the link below for the full trailer. Stay tuned for the release of the full film on November 28th at Orvis.com with support from Trout Unlimited

Tiny olive mayflies can hatch any time of year, but are especially common in late fall. When trout eat these annoying little bugs, at times they won't take anything larger than a size 24. But these flies are easy and simple to tie. You can do it! Watch how simple and easy these tiny imitations are to tie--in fact we'll have time to tie both a dun and a spinner.

Olive Yarn Sparkle Dun
Hook: Orvis BigEye dry, size 24
Thread: Yellow size 12/0
Tail: Tan Antron or Z-Lon yarn
Body: Pale olive dubbing
Wing: Fulling Mill Ultra Dry Yarn or EP Trigger Point, light gray

Tiny olive spinner
Hook: Orvis BigEye dry, size 24
Thread: Yellow size 12/0
Tail: Pale dun Microfibbetts or hackle fibers
Body: Pale tan/olive dubbing

Beds provided so much for a pup – a space of their own, a calming constant, and if they’re made right – an incredible tool for rest and recovery. Melinda’s Urban Uplander Pet Care, LLC pack shows off their RecoveryZone beds, getting a little R&R after serious exploration, field work and giving a lot of good dog energy.

In our stories today Melinda helps us understand how to properly train our dogs to sleep in their beds when first introducing them.

This is one of Tom's favorite streamers, especially for fall trout. Unlike many modern streamer patterns, it uses few materials and is not articulated, but it still has great action and appeal to trout everywhere. It is a time-consuming fly to tie, however, but worth the effort.
Moto’s Minnow
Hook: 4XL streamer hook, size 6-10
Bead: Gold tungsten cone, small
Extra weight: Non-toxic wire
Thread: Brown, 6/0
Tail: Brown marabou or brown grizzly marabou
Body/hackle: Brown Hungarian partridge feathers or brown mottled hen feathers. Can also tie with white marabou tail and gray Hungarian partridge, gray mottled hen saddle, or hen grizzly

Orvis Dog Ambassador, Melinda Benbow, brings us along on her pup’s dream day. They take advantage of all their local conservation areas have to offer around their home in Indianapolis. A dog trainer, owner/operator of Urban Uplander Pet Care, and upland enthusiast, Melinda knows how important it is for dogs to stay active and have opportunities to tap into their natural instincts. Not only from a physical health perspective, but for their mental and emotional well-being too. And of course, how key rest and recovery is to be able to get up and do it again the next day, and for years to come.

Check out our stories today for more about Melinda, and the importance of choosing a high-quality bed for your pup.

This is a modification of an old pattern by Frank Sawyer, creator of the Pheasant Tail nymph. It's not as popular as the PT but often equally deadly for imitations of small mayflies. Tom has modified the pattern from the English chalk stream version to a heavier pattern for faster and deeper American rivers.
