WE ARE LOCKED, STOCKED, AND READY TO ROCK. The annual Christkindlmarket and bookshop is kicking off this Saturday @ 11am during Christmas On The Prairie!

There will be wine tasting, awesome gifts, books, batched cocktails, wine, and goodies from the brilliant minds at Lexington Social!

Come support local business, drink great wine, and hang out for a while upstairs in the coziest winter wonderland!

AUGUST IN OUTLINE

We’ve been having ourselves a Midwestern Eurosummer. Long afternoons in the garden pergola, hanging with our newborn, and not thinking too much about the future.

The summer is coming to an end, and the fall will bring a bunch of new things. New events (music?? Book party?? Who knows!), new publishing projects (sneak peeks hidden throughout the post 👀), and some renewed energy towards current projects.

The beauty of Impeded Stream, and the beauty of life, is that you never really know where it’ll take you. We’re going to keep telling Midwestern stories and making cool things, we hope you’ll keep helping us do that. We’ll have more to share as the heat breaks.

PS, Thanks for buying SEASONS online and around town. We’ve had to restock at EVERY place they’re sold. We don’t have too many of the first edition left!

Not posting much because I’ve been spending time with my newborn baby and gardening.

But I’ve still got some books to sell. So go get urself a copy of SEASONS, it’s really good I think? Idk I’m biased. But the binding and artwork are certainly very pretty, so at least you’ll be buying something that LOOKS good.

It’s only fitting that a book about central Illinois life would be available at the most legendary of central Illinois establishments - the great .murphys !

Mother Murphy’s has been a local staple in Normal, IL since 1968 - feeding the counterculture with a steady supply of art, music, and products for to***co use only 😏

The crew at MM loves local art and culture. And SEASONS is as local as it gets. Published, written, edited, and design by folks who have been going up the stairs at Mother Murphy’s since adolescence. It’s an honor to sell this book there!

I wrote this poem last Spring when six people died on I-55 during a sudden onset dust storm, a lot like the that hit Illinois yesterday.

This is not a fluke. These storms are going to become increasingly more common until we reverse the terrible farming practices that go back almost 100 years. This is endgame for Earl Butz (Nixon’s secretary of agriculture) telling farmers to “get big or get out” of farming. Now we have millions of acres being unsustainably and chemically overfarmed. The land is rejecting our inputs and punishing us for the slow, methodical killing of the soil, trees, and native prairies.

These storms are going to get worse until we all decide to stop the Stalinism of corn/soy farming.

In the meantime, read Wendell Berry and Edward Abbey, buy local produce from small vegetable farmers, don’t spray the dandelions in your yard with pesticides, and pray the land shows us mercy.

Btw, this dust is FULL of pesticides and chemicals.
