It’s been so fun to watch these Luna caterpillar moths grow. We should be pretty close to cocoon time!

This year we’re learning how to raise Luna moths! This is a third instar Luna caterpillar with about 2 more weeks to go before it makes its cocoon. They should start eating a lot more soon and really grow in size over the next couple weeks, so we’re excited to see how it goes!

Learning to raise butterflies also includes learning all the proper terminology as you learn more about caterpillars, butterflies and their life cycles.

Like the difference between a chrysalis and a cocoon when most of us learned to use them interchangeably.

Or that a butterfly coming out of its chrysalis is called eclosion.

Or that caterpillars shed their skin multiple times and each new growth stage is called an instar.

Today I found 4 zebra swallowtail caterpillars on my pawpaw tree, and a zebra butterfly came back to visit while I was calling my mom in excitement. I haven’t successfully raised a zebra cat inside so I’m leaving them for now, but hoping I can bring them in before they make their chrysalis so we can release one!

We have our basic butterfly garden all set up…and now I’m very impatient for things to start growing and exploding to bring all the butterflies to the yard. We’ve got Mexican sunflowers, lots of milkw**d and plenty of zinnias in the raised bed. And then a pawpaw tree, lantana and mixed butterfly garden seeds in the pots. I might try to add some more nectar plants and some swallowtail host plants like dill and fennel to round out our butterfly offerings. 🐛🦋

Today we planted a row of tropical milkw**d and a row and a half of zinnias. Last week we put down Mexican sunflower seeds in the very back and a couple plots of butterfly w**d in the middle. I’m super excited to see how they fit together as they start growing 🌞🌻🐛🦋

Our lemon trees are finally starting to sprout! It was a fun experiment growing them from seeds. However I just read that normal lemon trees don’t produce fruit for an average of 6 years so I guess we’re playing the long game here 😅😬😵

My pawpaw tree is finally starting to come back to life! I can’t wait to find a forever home for this guy and watch him reach his potential. My goal for this summer is to successfully raise a zebra swallowtail - they seem to be a bit harder to care for than the other swallowtails, so I need all the leaves I can get on this tree! And any tips you have for zebras!
