In all the excitement of the International Quilt Festival trip, I havenโt shared much about the quilt I had there! My quilt, โThe World Within a Poppyseed,โ was accepted as a finalist and honored with a Jurorโs Choice ribbon in the 2024 Cherrywood Challenge!
The Challenge is hosted by and limits you to a pre-selected eight color fabric palette, with no limits on embellishment; this yearโs theme was poppies ๐บ
This is my Artistโs Statement:
The World Within a Poppyseed:
โI have always been drawn to the imaginative minds of surrealist artists. Thinking of the vivid colors and psychoactive properties of poppies, I was inspired to create my own surrealist painting, imagining the expansive world within a tiny poppyseed. I finished the edge of the quilt without visible binding to mimic a canvas painting without a frame. With this challenge, I chose to showcase texture, and color by using several quilting styles and fabric modification techniques. This quilt utilizes more than fifteen different techniques, including chenille,
shadowfolding, furrowing, multiple styles of appliquรฉ and embroidery, foundation paper piecing, trapunto, plus more. Dimensional painting added a final touch of depth and definition to the piece.โ
