I started Deep Blue a few years ago after seeing plastic-covered beaches in Bali, Mexico, Haiti, and some other parts of the world.

Not like, a little trash. Covered. It was the kind of thing you can’t unsee.

That was the whole reason this brand exists.

And I just kept thinking about how much of it came from clothing. Synthetic fabrics, fast fashion, stuff made to be thrown away.

So I did the opposite.

Every order pulls 1Ib of plastic from the ocean.

We’ve pulled 2,259 lbs so far - 2,259,000 straws, 225,900 forks - just from people buying clothes they actually wanted.

These cleanups happen as a side effect of people living their lives. Nobody had to go out of their way. I think that’s pretty cool.

Anyway. Happy Earth Day. Spend some time outside today! 🌏

THE SCIENCE BEHIND WHY YOU FEEL CALMER BY THE OCEAN 🌊

Ever wonder why your whole body seems to exhale the moment you reach the beach? It’s not just in your head — it’s science.

When you’re near the ocean, your brain enters what researchers call the “Blue Mind” state — a calm, meditative mindset triggered by the color blue, the rhythmic sound of waves, and the freshness of sea air.

Here’s what’s happening inside your body when that switch flips: your heart rate slows, blood pressure drops, and stress hormones like cortisol decrease. At the same time, your brain releases serotonin and dopamine, the feel-good chemicals that boost your mood and help you feel more present.

Your parasympathetic nervous system (the part of your body that helps you rest and recover) kicks in, shifting you out of fight-or-flight mode and into a state of peace, clarity, and restoration.

Spending time by water — whether it’s the ocean, a lake, or even a quiet river — has been linked to lower anxiety, reduced depression risk, and longer lifespans. Studies show that people who live or spend more time near “blue spaces” often experience higher creativity, better sleep, and improved overall mental health.

So next time you find yourself drawn to the coast, remember: your body knows what it’s doing. The ocean doesn’t just relax you — it rewires your brain for calm and healing. 🌊💙

Florida's reefs almost didn't make it. 🪸

In the summer of 2023, ocean temperatures off the Florida Keys peaked around 101°F and stayed far above normal for months. Coral here usually thrives in the low 80s — when water lingers just a few degrees above its typical summer maximum in the high 80s, it begins to bleach. When water gets too hot, coral expels the algae living inside it, turns ghost white, and slowly starves to death.

The result was the worst bleaching event ever recorded on Florida's reef. Staghorn and elkhorn coral — the branching, tree‑like species that form the backbone of the reef and shelter thousands of creatures — were nearly wiped out at many sites. Some monitoring locations reported nearly 100% bleaching. Entire stretches of the third‑largest barrier reef on Earth went silent.

But people refused to let it die. The Coral Restoration Foundation had spent years growing more heat‑tolerant corals in underwater nurseries. Mote Marine Laboratory developed a way to grow some corals up to 40x faster than they would in the wild. Volunteer divers planted corals by hand — over 300,000 fragments across Florida's reef since restoration efforts began.

It worked. In 2025, Florida's restored corals spawned naturally again after the die‑off. Multiple species. Viable larvae. New life on a reef that two years earlier looked like a graveyard.

Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean, yet house about 25% of all marine life, have helped unlock treatments for diseases including some cancers and HIV, and generate an estimated $9.9 trillion in value every year.

Protect our reefs. 🌊
