MobLand will return to Paramount+ on September 18, 2026, with Tom Hardy reprising his role as Harrigan family fixer Harry Da Souza. Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren also return as Conrad and Maeve Harrigan, leading a ten-episode second season that will release new installments every Friday.

The new season begins with the Harrigans struggling to present a united front while rising rivals threaten their fractured criminal empire. Harry must navigate intensifying tensions inside the family as violence spreads throughout their lives and loyalties begin collapsing. The returning ensemble is joined by Johnny Flynn and Ophelia Lovibond, expanding the dangerous world surrounding the Harrigans.

Rather than treating the first season’s gang war as a finished conflict, MobLand is using its consequences to push the family toward an even larger struggle for survival. Its combination of old-fashioned crime-family politics, British underworld atmosphere and heavyweight performances has given modern gangster television another major dynasty to follow.

In “College,” Tony Soprano takes Meadow on a tour of prospective schools while secretly hunting Fabian “Febby” Petrulio, a former associate living under a new identity after becoming an informant. Tony eventually strangles him, marking the first time viewers watched the show’s leading character personally commit murder onscreen.

HBO executives objected because they feared the killing would destroy the audience’s connection with Tony. David Chase argued the opposite: allowing a mob boss to discover an informant and simply walk away would make the character unbelievable. Chase prevailed, and the episode aired on February 7, 1999, forcing viewers to confront Tony’s brutality without the comfortable distance television traditionally gave its protagonists.

That decision established the moral tension that powered The Sopranos for the rest of its run. Chase recalled his mother telling him during the Vietnam War that she would rather see him dead than avoiding the draft. Instead of constructing an enormous gambling floor on a soundstage, the production filmed inside the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas while the property remained open for business.

Cinematographer Robert Richardson recalled that the crew generally began working around 10 or 11 at night and continued into the morning, when activity was easier to manage. They still had to navigate the casino’s constant noise, customers and reflective surfaces while adding specialized lighting to the existing ceiling. Scorsese believed that real people moving and gambling in the background created an electric, almost hallucinatory energy that a controlled set could not reproduce.

That decision helps explain why Casino feels less like a recreation of Las Vegas than an immersion inside it. Ace Rothstein’s meticulously controlled world unfolds against a location that remained unpredictable and alive, creating the visual tension between order and chaos that drives the entire film. Scorsese did not simply rebuild the atmosphere of old Vegas; he captured its pulse inside a casino that was still operating around him.

Steven Van Zandt had never acted professionally when David Chase considered him for Tony Soprano. Van Zandt recalled that Chase wanted to break television’s conventional casting rules after noticing his charisma during a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame appearance. The musician eventually recorded an audition using a monologue from the pilot, footage that resurfaced during his May 2026 appearance on The Tonight Show.

According to Van Zandt, HBO considered placing such a large production in the hands of an inexperienced lead too great a risk, and James Gandolfini ultimately became Tony. Chase still wanted Van Zandt in the series, but the musician felt uncomfortable taking an established actor’s job. He remembered Chase solving the problem by offering to write a new character specifically for him: Tony’s immaculately dressed consigliere, Silvio Dante.

The casting decision created two performances that became inseparable from The Sopranos. Gandolfini supplied the vulnerability and menace required to carry the drama, while Van Zandt turned a role that had not originally existed into one of its most recognizable figures.
