🚨 Someone told me I shouldn’t take my nonverbal autistic son grocery shopping.

They called it irresponsible.

And honestly, it breaks my heart that someone can look at a 10-year-old autistic child simply existing in his community and decide he doesn’t belong there.

Because while someone else saw a child they thought should be kept home…

I saw my son working on independence.

He grocery shopped.
He brought his things to the register.
He helped ring them up.
He paid.

Was it perfect? No.

But independence doesn’t happen by keeping our kids away from the world.

It happens by giving them opportunities to be IN the world.

He deserves to learn.
He deserves to participate.
He deserves to be seen.

And most importantly…

He belongs here. Just like everyone else. ❤️

🛑 My son’s pediatrician told me to starve him and that he would eat when he was hungry enough…..

He told us to take away his only safe food (cookies)

And that’s the moment we found a new doctor

Because kids like him with Autism and sensory differences that can come along with feeding challenges like ARFID will choose to starve…

So sometimes , a safe food is the very thing keeping a child eating while we work toward expanding their diet safely.

Please stop telling parents of autistic children to “just starve them until they eat.”

Some children don’t work that way.

‼️ I used to think they were deaf before I knew they had Autism 🧩

Trying to take a picture of them and it reminded me of when they were younger before the Autism diagnosis….

My first thought was that they just couldn’t hear me…

Now I know they hear everything and just choose what they want to acknowledge 😂

🚨 This is a huge Sensory Trigger For My Autistic Boys…..

If you live with autism and serious sensory issues,

you know it isn’t always simple as just pumpkin carving

For years, we have tried pumpkin carving with the boys….

But The smell, the sight, the texture ….it can be so overwhelming

that they gag and sometimes even throw up.

But this year was different.

CJ tried. He knew when he had reached his limit, and we respected that.

Matty had to back away a few times too… but he kept coming back.

And he stayed until the very end.

Did Mom and Dad do most of the actual carving? 😂 Absolutely.

But this was progress

my boys were able to be part of something that their sensory systems have made incredibly difficult for them in the past.

Sometimes progress doesn’t look like doing the whole thing independently.

Sometimes it looks like trying.

Sometimes it looks like staying.

And sometimes it looks like coming back after you had to step away.

“BUT IF HE DOESN’T TALK, HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT HE WANTS?” 👀

Oh, trust me… CJ WILL find a way. 😂❤️

CJ is non-speaking autistic, but this boy is SO independent.

If he wants milk, he’s going to get his milk. He’s not waiting around for someone to figure it out for him!

Now, will the milk actually make it into the cup? Will the cover go on? Will the milk be all over the floor? 😂😂 That’s what we’re working on!

I’m learning that my job isn’t to do everything FOR him. It’s to teach him how to do more for HIMSELF.

He knows what he wants. Now we’re working on the next steps to help him do it safely and independently.

🚨 This is the part of nonverbal Autism I wish the world could understand….

This is my 10-year-old son, Matty. He has autism and he is nonverbal.

His big sister Tati is 21. She was telling him about her college graduation.

He can’t tell his sister, “I’m proud of you.”

He can’t say, “Congratulations.”

But please don’t ever confuse not speaking with not understanding.

He knows his sister.
He knows her voice.
He knows her.
He connects with her.
And he has his own way of showing love.

I don’t need him to say the words for me to know how much love is inside of him.

Nonverbal is not the absence of a voice.
It is a different way of communicating.

So when you see a child who doesn’t speak, please don’t assume there is nothing being said.

Sometimes you just have to learn how to listen. ❤️

Autism Affects The WHOLE family 🧩

I thought autism was something that happened to my boys.

Then I realized it was something that changed all of us.

When Tati and her friends signed up for the Autism Speaks Run on their own, something hit me.

Autism feels different for every member of a family.

And watching them cross that finish line, I realized something…

Autism isn’t just part of my boys’ story. It’s part of our family’s story.

It has shaped their sisters.
It has shaped our marriage.
It has shaped our friendships.
It has shaped the way our entire family sees the world.

And yet, somehow, in the middle of all the hard parts, there is SO much joy. ❤️

Today, approximately 1 in 31 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism.

But behind every statistic is a child.

And behind that child is a family learning how to love, advocate, adapt, celebrate and sometimes completely rethink what they thought life would look like.
