The rug is always too small
It's the most common decor mistake we see, and it happens in beautiful homes with beautiful furniture: the tiny rug floating in the middle of the living room.
You know the look. A small rectangle stranded in the center of the floor, sofa and chairs pushed back against the walls, nothing quite touching. The room feels scattered even though everything in it is nice.
Here's the rule of thumb: the front legs of every seat should sit on the rug. Sofa, armchairs, accent chairs, all of them. If they don't, size up.
That one change does something surprising. The rug stops being a floating decoration and starts acting like an anchor, pulling the seating into a single, intentional group. Suddenly the room reads as arranged instead of just furnished.
If you're between sizes, always go bigger. A rug that's slightly too large still looks deliberate. A rug that's too small makes the whole room look unfinished, no matter how good everything else is.
