Just shared these pics on the Lake Erie Rockhounding Group page on a similar post inquiring on, so thought I’d parlay them over here while the iron’s hot. Found on Lake Erie in Northeast Ohio—some type of mammal/wild canine tooth perhaps. I’d like to believe Grey Wolf, but more likely Coyote. Super sweet regardless.

ROCK OF THE WEEK:

This one little lone loaded sodalite spot in this pounder allowed me to spy it a good 20’ out, 10” deep in the 2’ waves of Lake Erie with my LumenShooter S5. 🔦 It wasn’t moving, so figured it wasn’t glowing trash lol. Yes I got drenched…

Our local fluorescent sodalite (layman’s term) patterns & host rocks from Lake Erie in Northeast Ohio are notably odd compared to some on the other Great Lakes and could potentially be from Ontario’s “Mineral Capital” Bancroft Complex (vs their Coldwell Complex). Searching both complex’s on the web provides some deeper insight for your own hypothesis.

Another plausible reason why we elect to call our local FS finds “NEOlites.” 🤷🏻‍♂️

To some of you night UV hunters this post may be elementary, but it’s for the benefit for those who may have been unsuccessful…or are about to be lol.

I’m highlighting this recent haul as it contains some high contrast matrix patterns that could be easily missed. Unlike the proverbial, obvious, bright, spotty speckled ones, some can be a bit dull, getting passed up. In two circled photos, one rock looks almost solid black, with a closer shot showing a spray paint like matrix.

I was near Geneva on business last week and had some time after to speed hunt for about an hour (these pics). So if you are getting skunked, there’s some aspect of your; timing/location, tactics, or gear that may be off.

After my first two unsuccessful outings a couple years ago, my first successful hunt was with Justin Lynn, an experienced guide and page owner of Lake Erie Fluorescent Mineral Hunters. That made ALL the difference. Is highly recommended to seek on-site assistance and nearly every hunt since has been just glowing.

Going slow also helps an untrained eye. AND, a proper 365 nm filtered UV is critical (not a purple beam Walmart 395 black light cheap-o).

I also recommend some cheap/legit, CLEAR, UV safety glasses ($5-$6 bucks on Ama) to cut the ambient haze and protect your eyes—especially for reflective glare water hunting…

There’s been some Group discussions recently about the growing popularity of UV night hunting depleting our area beaches of NEOlite fluorescent mineral rocks (pooperlite 😉).

The beach backs may be picked or stale per lack of windy wave days prior, but most of this evening’s finds were pulled from the water—NOT the beach back sandy picked stale shore.

WE use the free Windy.com app to plot calm nights with low wind preferably from the South, to get a good 20’-30’ out in the no-waves waterline for fresh finds. Supportive shoes for unstable ground in the water, waders for colder temps. An LED headlamp is also highly recommended to toggle back-n-forth to check the water depth landscape if necessary.

I equate it to fishing: Fish move around and only bite at certain times & in certain weather conditions etc.. You can’t just pick a random, convenient weekend, travel, get a hotel and expect them to be laying around.

Fridays after storm or windy waves I’ll generously give 75% odds…for the novice hunter.

Saturdays, the odds lessen per Friday’s hunters.

Sundays, you may only find what others missed Friday & Saturday…hopefully.

Mondays-Thursdays are prime, especially right after storms or windy wavey days…

Fall, Spring and no ground snow Winter days are great also, as they w**d out the freeze baby faint of hearts, js.

Like hunting anything else, you have to plan, prepare & strategize a bit. Or it would be like just picking a random weekend to go hunt Elk in a common area or where they’re simply not likely to be. Or at the end of hunting season where they’re already eaten or mounted on somebody’s wall lol.

And for goodness sakes, you need a 365nm filtered UV light—not a purple beam 395 cheap-o from Harbor Freight (you’ll find some fluorescent fishing gear and that’s it). YouTube and Lake Erie Fluorescent Mineral Hunters & other Groups can provide lots of info on if you “surf” around.
