Trees can communicate with each other in a variety of ways, including through scent signals and underground networks of fungi:
Pheromones
Trees release scent signals to warn other trees of danger and call for help. For example, if an acacia tree is injured by a giraffe, it releases ethylene gas as a distress signal. Nearby acacia trees then release tannins into their leaves, which can sicken or kill giraffes if consumed in large quantities. Trees can also detect scents through their leaves and taste danger.
Mycorrhizal networks
Trees form a symbiotic relationship with fungi called mycorrhizae, which colonize the trees' roots and connect them together. This network, which ecologist Suzanne Simard called the "Wood Wide Web" in a 1997 paper, allows trees to send and receive chemical messages, nutrients, and signals. Trees use this information to share important information for the health of the forest, such as warning each other of danger, helping seedlings grow, and mitigating competition.
