Her house closed in 1988. The techniques she developed are still studied in couture ateliers today. Some things don’t go out of business.

What she mastered — draping directly on the body, working without a flat pattern, building structure through fabric alone — remains one of the most demanding skills in dressmaking. And one of the most rare.

If you’re sewing a rolled hem on chiffon, the main challenge is preventing the fabric from shifting, stretching, or getting pulled into the needle plate.

Working with a curved hem — especially on a circle skirt or a bias-cut garment — adds another challenge. The hem allowance has a larger circumference than the stitching line, so if you simply fold it up, you may end up with little ripples or puckers.

The cleanest solution is a very narrow rolled hem, but the key is controlling the extra fullness before it reaches the needle.
