Needed a dress 🙃

I dyed this incredibly luxurious silk velvet with madder and hollyhocks a while back for my studio curtains, but I had intended for them to be a pale peach and not really this pinkish coral. Turns out they were made for more.

I can’t even describe how incredible and slinky it feels on. I hardly ever make things for myself, but this one is for me.

I’m adding some crochet around the neckline for some extra subtle shimmer.

It’s pretty easy to make a caftan this shape. Two rectangles sewn together and at the sides and give it a hem. The simplicity of the shape and silhouette means it’s all about the fabric. Well, it’s always all about the fabric.

Looks like I’ll be needing some new curtains. 🌸

Every time the world pushes me to speed up, I feel pulled to slow down and go the long way.

Hand-dyed botanical plaid—that’s one way to take the long way. A nearly 20-step process that combines a modified shibori indigo dye technique with weld, madder root, and Virginia black walnut for a soft, organic, watercolor plaid.

A return to deeply intentional craft and handwork, with easy, comfortable pieces made to move and breathe, never hot, always gentle, always inspired by nature.

Designed, dyed, cut, and sewn by me in my Middleburg studio.

Limited pieces, available now.

It’s December and the first time in over a decade I’m not feeling oppressively sad and anxious at the first sight of Christmas lights.

Do you know how long it took me to heal from the trauma of cancer? Over 10 years.

I feel embarrassed to say that because it’s such a long time. Sometimes it makes me mad. Over a decade wasted. And wasn’t I just supposed to be grateful to be alive?

For years, I wondered, what is wrong with me? Why don’t I feel better? I was supposed to be healed, but I was paralyzed by fear, overwhelmed with anxiety in my body, and unable to fall asleep on my own.

I was going to therapy, but it wasn’t helping.

When I discovered how trauma is stored in the body, this changed the trajectory of my healing forever, and I was finally able to feel safe in my body again.

Here are two books that changed my life: by Bessel van der Kolk and Waking the Tiger by Peter Levine.

I hope this encourages you today. If you are feeling like it’s taking you a long time to heal, and maybe you’re afraid to admit it because you don’t want to complain, or because everyone has a timeline for your healing (even you), or you feel misunderstood, even by yourself, your doctor, or your therapist. Keep going.

As long as there’s breath in your lungs, you can do it. Healing just takes longer than anyone told you. I promise.

Happy Small Business Saturday! I had no idea when I started St. VA that it would be as much about growing myself as growing my business.

It requires way more faith, vulnerability, perseverance, resilience, and creativity than I ever could have imagined.

I often have a hard time with social media, but I’m incredibly grateful for the way it has allowed me to find so many inspiring, successful, innovative small businesses, artists, designers, and creators.

I am in awe of us all and you who love and support what we do and actually pay money for what we create. There’s nothing better.

As a small thank you, enjoy 20% off everything in the shop with code SMALLBIZ20 now through Monday.

We very rarely have sales, so please take advantage of this special offer.

And check out the beautiful new caftans and a small release of new scarves, too.

Cheers to all of you small biz owners, employees, supporters, and friends. You make the world go ‘round.

Lots of love,
Amy

Minty fresh. My obsession with getting the perfect shade of mint green with natural dyes continues.

These organic cotton scarves are dyed with indigo and weld, and printed with coreopsis, orange and cranberry cosmos, and red marigold from the garden.

This color is soo pretty on nearly every skin tone.

The square scarf is my favorite casual everyday accessory for indoors in winter. Always cozy but never hot.

These will be available the shop on Friday.
