Happy Halloween.

Yesterday’s kitchen demo on Milwaukee’s East Side uncovered horsehair plaster. Can you see the tiny hairs?

Before drywall became common, plaster was applied over narrow strips of wood called lath. The plaster mixture typically included lime, sand, water, and animal hair.

The hair acted as a reinforcing fiber, helping hold the plaster together and reduce shrinkage cracking. The plaster was applied in layers, with the base coat pressed through gaps in the lath to create anchors that held it in place.

This method was widely used in older homes for centuries and gradually gave way to drywall in the mid-20th century.

Custom cabinet doors, classic NYC subway tile, and one-of-a-kind natural stone. The right materials, the right trades, and a remodel executed to the level it deserves.

An East Side kitchen in the making. Dramatic soapstone, rich wood cabinetry, and a creamy backsplash with subtle movement. A mix of materials that feels both classic and fresh.

More cemetery photos from the archives, this time from Rabat, Morocco. 🪦 Graveyard by the Sea.

Another East Side remodel signed.

Before the proposal went out: architectural plans, subcontractor walkthroughs, actual vendor and sub pricing.

I don’t wing it. I plan it!
