TW: Missed Miscarriage
Just 3 days before starting a second IVF cycle to grow our family, we were shocked to see our very first spontaneous positive pregnancy test. And for 2.5 months, we got to secretly love on our little strawberry with so much excitement and disbelief! We began planning and scheming how our lives were about to change. How Rome would be as a big brother, what house projects we would need to finish & which pregnancy items to pull out of storage.
But at our 10 week scan, we learned we were having a Missed Miscarriage. “We’re sorry, there is no longer a heartbeat” rang through the room. It is a blunt kind of heartbreak that has reshaped us from the inside out.
A missed miscarriage carries a very specific pain: where your body holds onto a pregnancy for weeks, sometimes months, after it has ended. Your symptoms are all still there, your baby still nestled in place, and your tummy still bloated. It leaves you stranded in an invisible pain while the rest of the world carries on around you. It is a quiet purgatory where you are forced to carry the daily reminders of what is no longer coming your way.
This journey has had days of immense gratitude followed by days of unbearable sadness. But in the darkest moments, the peace I’ve clung to most has come from women & friends of mine who have opened up about their own losses. Reading those countless stories has reminded me of a truth that is so hard to offer ourselves: they did nothing wrong to deserve their heartbreak, and neither did I.
Unfortunately there is no neat bow to wrap around this kind of loss—no easy answers or tidy endings. If this is your journey as well, I see you and hold your grief alongside mine.
To our sweet little strawberry: you were loved from the very first second, and you have changed our hearts forever 🍓✨🪽
