We know the best restaurants across the country, the most popular hiking trails on Instagram, and places we'll probably never visit—but how well do we know what's right around the corner?

This week, pick a local nature center or state park you've driven past but never stopped to explore.
Leave your phone in the car and take your time. Walk a trail, read the signs, watch the wildlife, and notice what you've been driving past for years.

You don't always have to go far to find something new.
Sometimes, you just have to finally stop.

Unplug Weekly Tip #189: Visit a local nature center or state park you've always driven past but never stopped to explore.

Kids aren’t supposed to need constant stimulation to feel okay.

They need to learn how to be bored, create, play, explore, and enjoy life without needing a screen to make it interesting.

And that doesn’t mean technology is bad. It means teaching our kids that a screen is an activity—not the default.

We wouldn’t give a 12-year-old a credit card and tell them to figure it out, so why give them unrestricted access to the internet?

The teenage years are already complicated enough without adding an entire digital world of strangers, comparison, and endless stimulation.

Let's set boundaries: delay smartphones, delay social media, and give kids more time to grow up in the real world. That doesn’t mean keeping technology away forever. It means letting kids develop the confidence, judgment, and relationships they need before handing them unlimited access.

They need childhood before they need a feed.
They need real friends before followers.
They need boredom, independence, adventure, and face-to-face connection.

As parents, sometimes protecting our kids means being willing to make the unpopular choice.
Because they may not thank us for the boundary today… but they may be grateful for the childhood we protected tomorrow.
