It’s an antique Dutch bakery mold with hand carved figures cut into a slab of dark heavy wood. It’s said to have been used as a mold for celebration biscuits. It measures 48x24”—that’s a lot of biscuits!

Muskegon, Michigan spent a century as a hard-working industrial port, and now it is doing something a lot of Great Lakes cities are trying to pull off: turning its waterfront back toward the people. 🌆 Where foundries and factories once crowded the shore of Muskegon Lake, there are now boardwalks, marinas, breweries, and new places to live and gather right at the water's edge.

Muskegon was once known as the Lumber Queen of the World, and later a manufacturing hub, but as heavy industry faded the city was left with a shoreline it had mostly turned its back on. The reinvention has been steady and real. Old industrial sites are becoming parks and mixed-use developments, the downtown is filling back in, and the channel that links Muskegon Lake to Lake Michigan brings kayakers and boaters right through the middle of it. The city still honors its past too, with the World War II submarine USS Silversides preserved as a museum in the harbor.

Comeback stories like this are some of the most hopeful things happening in the Great Lakes right now. 🚣 It takes real vision to look at an old industrial waterfront and see a future there instead of just a past. What Great Lakes city do you think has done the best job reinventing its waterfront?
