Costume Concept: costuming in the middle of a pandemic was crazy. We had to be super cautious and mindful of everything. We were asked by New Orleans Opera to costume design for “An Homage to Josephine Baker” directed by Lauren Turner-Hines. This was a challenging project but well worth it. A one woman show and it was gorgeous.

We researched images, stories, music, talked to actresses and historians, videos and time periods about Josephine Baker. We were obsessed for 4 months studying her. Time well spent.

Costume Concept: this was a fun project bc everyone we designed for we ❤️ love. needed new costumes for the Carnival season. , founder and director, hit us up and wanted non-traditional African dance costumes. Her client requested a “coming to America “ themed performance. So we pulled up some pics for inspiration. created the headpieces, arm pieces and leg pieces. She used feathers, appliqué, white yarn, cowrie shells, jewels and glitter glue. I bought African print bathing suits from online. I embellished them with jewels, Spotlight sequins, I hand painted designs on the bra top and added raffia to the bottoms for movement and coverage.

Costume Concepts: this may have been my favorite project all year. My first Baby Doll costume!!! called me and was like “I have everything! I just need you to make it” BOOM! Kay had a clear vision and she is a DOPE ASS ARTIST herself! Because she made everything else. I just made the dress. I think Kay made me like pink again🥰🥰 I found a babydoll dress pattern online. I had to alter the pattern bc it wasn’t designed for hips and ass..but I made it work. Added the appliqués on the bust bc they are baby dolls after dark. I loved everything about working with these ladies❤️❤️❤️

I had the Honor of creating these Beautiful babydoll dresses this year for Mardi Gras 2022 💛💜💚
Awesome experience and it was a pleasure bringing vision to life❤️❤️❤️ Thank you again, Beautiful Dolls.. until next year💓💓💓💓💓💓
is definitely my fav🥰

Costume Concepts: working with was a dream. I love Kesha, her work and I love all the ladies involved. So it was easy to create for this ensemble!
Kesha was really clear about what she wanted as far as flow of the costumes and colors. White was the base color and she wanted to incorporate yellow for Oshun. Starting off with a bold yellow, I wanted to add gold, satin, chiffon and African print to add texture.
4 costume changes for everyone!
I used mustard color yarn, cowrie shells, sequins, I made appliqués, gold and silver glitter glue, and the key ingredient, Mirrors!
Mirrors were used throughout every costume to show self reflection.
Each dancer have beautiful bodies and I wanted to accent that in all costumes. So I used cold shoulder shirts, crop tops, A-Line skirts, and inverted shirts. According to Kesha she wanted everything flowy, so we kept that integrity throughout the piece.
created the collar for Sunni by using mirrors, yarn that she braided, jewels and cowrie shells. I’m not a jeweler but I created Sunni headpiece with gold chains and cowrie shells. I created a head scarf for by making appliqués and sewing them on to a base scarf. We had fun creatively on this project.. I cry Everytime I see this piece bc everything about it is soooo Amazing. More pics coming soon.

The process:
Creating costumes for “Requiem for a Stranger” was a challenge bc the project was about navigating grief. Jenny Sargent wanted costumes that were color block but not too bold. That was challenging for me because I approach all of my work through bold colors, patterns and textures. The costumes needed to move with the cast but would be durable enough where they can climb up and down ladders, roll on the floor, slide between tables and chairs.. I chose bold colors to show different colors of grief, but I distressed the clothes by using a blow torch, spray paint, acrylic paint, sand paper, wire brush and scissors. It was a long process bc I had to see what worked and what didn’t work.. the clothes had to be hand washed every night and air dried to keep the quality of the costume.. I worked hand and hand with the set designer Jeff Becker bc I needed the costumes to connect with the set in every way. Jeff created iron sculptures that reached to the ceiling and drew lines on the floor to represent waters, streams, rivers. I saw the lines as grief mapping and roots; so I painted lines down one side of each costume to connect the casts with the set but also to represent “Grounding” in the space of grief.. I looked at each cast member body type and skin color to help choose colors for the cast..
all costumes were cotton based, rayon and stretchy..

We really loved the process of showing grief in color through costumes. Most of the time we wanted to use grey, but we know Grief hits everyone different and at different times. And Grief has many colors. We had to distress, wash and rewash, paint and dye the fabrics to get the perfect palette! I hope you enjoy
