Retinoblastoma is a childhood eye cancer. When found early, it can often be treated successfully.

Parents and caregivers, if you notice a white reflection in your child's eye in a photograph, don't ignore it. Visit a health worker promptly for assessment.

SHE HAS COMPLETED CANCER TREATMENT. NOW, WE WANT TO HELP HER RETURN TO SCHOOL. 💛

There were days when little Miranda needed oxygen just to breathe. Days when her mother struggled with hospital bills, medication costs and the uncertainty of what tomorrow would bring.

Through her treatment at Baptist Hospital Mutengene, her family faced challenges no family should have to face alone.

But people came together. Through Ellaniel Foundation, compassionate people helped provide emergency financial support for Miranda’s medical needs.

And today, we have beautiful news to share: Miranda has completed her cancer treatment! 💛

We are grateful to her medical team, her courageous mother, and everyone who stood with this family.

But Miranda has another dream. She wants to return to school.

Her school fees are 80,000 FCFA. After everything she has been through, we want to help her take this next step.

Imagine having a child diagnosed with cancer, knowing they need specialized treatment, but struggling to afford the transport to the hospital.

For many families, the challenge isn’t only the diagnosis. It’s the distance, the cost of repeated journeys, unreliable transportation, difficult roads, and the fear of missing an important appointment because getting to the hospital is simply too expensive.

Every trip can mean another financial sacrifice for a family already carrying so much. And when treatment requires repeated hospital visits, these transportation barriers can become overwhelming.

No child should face a greater barrier to lifesaving care simply because of where they live.

At Ellaniel Foundation, we believe access to childhood cancer care must go beyond the hospital walls. Families need support to reach treatment, attend follow-up appointments, and navigate an already difficult journey with dignity.

🎗️💃💃💃💃 MIRANDA WON THE BATTLE! OUR LITTLE SUPERHERO IS GOING HOME! 🦸🏾‍♀️🎉

Today, we are not asking you to help save a life. Today, we are inviting you to CELEBRATE A LIFE! 💛

Our beautiful, energetic, and courageous little warrior, MIRANDA, has completed her cancer treatment and is finally going home! 🥹🎉

What a journey it has been!

Behind this beautiful victory are months of pain, uncertainty, sacrifice, tears, prayers, and extraordinary acts of kindness.

There were days when Miranda lay in the hospital fighting for her life. Days when she needed oxygen to breathe. Days when medications were urgently needed and hospital bills kept mounting.

There were days when her mother called us in tears, desperately asking for help. Days when exhaustion overwhelmed her, when the financial burden seemed unbearable, and when all she could do was hope that her little girl would survive.

But through it all, MIRANDA KEPT FIGHTING! 💪🏾💛

And what a remarkable little fighter she has been!

Miranda became one of our most cherished warriors at Ellaniel Foundation. Even in the middle of her difficult journey, her beautiful energy, lively personality, and incredible ability to connect with everyone around her brought warmth and joy to our hearts.

She wasn't just another child receiving treatment. She became family.

A child has a persistent fever. Another develops unusual swelling. A parent notices that something about their child’s health is not right.

These signs do not automatically mean cancer. But when symptoms are persistent, unusual or getting worse, they deserve proper medical assessment.

Here is why early detection matters: it is not just about noticing symptoms. It is about what happens after they are noticed.

Can the child get an accurate diagnosis?
Can the family reach a specialized care centre?
Can treatment begin without avoidable delays?
Can the family continue treatment without being overwhelmed by the cost, distance or lack of support?

WHO identifies delayed or incorrect diagnosis, barriers to treatment and interruptions in care among the challenges contributing to avoidable childhood cancer deaths.

This is why awareness alone is not enough. Families need information. Health workers need the skills and resources to recognize warning signs and refer appropriately. Children need timely diagnosis, evidence-based treatment and support throughout their journey.

At Ellaniel Foundation, we want more people to understand not only the warning signs of childhood cancer, but also the importance of acting on concerns and helping families find appropriate care.

Don't diagnose. Don't dismiss. Seek medical assessment.

SAME DISEASE. DIFFERENT REALITIES.

A child with cancer should not have a different chance of survival simply because of where that child was born.

Yet this remains one of the biggest challenges in childhood cancer today.

The science has already shown that many childhood cancers are treatable and curable. In countries where comprehensive childhood cancer services are accessible, more than 80% of children can be cured. In many low- and middle-income countries, survival remains below 30%.

So the question is no longer only:

“Can childhood cancer be treated?”

It is also:

Can the child be diagnosed early?
Can the correct diagnosis be made?
Can the family reach specialized care?
Are the medicines available, affordable and quality-assured?
Can treatment continue without interruption?
Does the family receive the support needed to complete the journey?

These are exactly the kinds of gaps the global childhood cancer community is working to close.

In September 2026, WHO launched a new strategy focused specifically on making childhood cancer medicines more available, affordable, quality-assured and reliably supplied. A baseline across 51 hospitals in 12 countries found that only about 45% of essential childhood cancer medicines were available, while nearly half of the hospitals had experienced stocks being unavailable for at least a month.

And WHO has set a global ambition: at least 60% childhood cancer survival by 2030.

That means early detection matters.
Diagnosis matters.
Treatment access matters.
Medicines matter.
Support matters.
Health systems matter.

The survival gap can change.

At Ellaniel Foundation, we believe Cameroon must be part of that change, by building awareness, strengthening early recognition and referral, supporting families, and keeping childhood cancer where it belongs: on the public health agenda.

Because geography should never decide whether a child gets a chance to survive.

Two questions. Two misconceptions worth challenging.

“Is childhood cancer still a myth?”

No.

Children do develop cancer. Leukemia, brain tumours, lymphomas, Wilms tumour and other childhood cancers are real diseases that require proper medical diagnosis and specialised care.

“Can childhood cancer be treated?”

Yes.

Many childhood cancers can be treated, and many children can be cured when they are diagnosed early, receive the right treatment at the right time. WHO reports that in settings where comprehensive childhood cancer services are accessible, more than 80% of children with cancer can be cured.

So why are children still dying?

Community members are still not aware of these symptoms,

Because treatment existing is not the same as treatment being accessible.

A child may face delays getting a diagnosis.
A family may struggle to reach a specialised centre.
Essential medicines may not always be available.
A diagnosis may come when the disease is already advanced.
Families may struggle with the financial and emotional burden of completing treatment.

And this is where the conversation becomes especially important for countries like Cameroon.

A 2026 Ellaniel Foundation assessment of childhood cancer care in Cameroon found progress in workforce training and psychosocial and financial support, but persistent gaps in diagnostic capacity and government financing.

Globally, WHO is also now focusing heavily on access to childhood cancer medicines. Its September 2026 strategy reported that, across 51 hospitals assessed in 12 countries, only about 45% of essential childhood cancer medicines were available, with nearly half reporting that some medicines had been out of stock for at least a month during the previous year.

So the question is no longer simply:

“Can childhood cancer be treated?”

We must also ask:

Can every child who needs treatment actually reach it?

That's the gap we must help close.
