Measure under your bust, snug around your ribcage.
Measure across the fullest part of your bust.
Subtract the first number from the second.

In US sizing: 7 inches = G. 8 inches = H.
Same letter, different band? Different cup size.

You're not imagining it.
An H cup is a step past G, and most stores run out of rack before they get there.
Department stores typically stop at a DDD, sometimes a G.

It's also where construction stops being optional.
Most bras are built around a mid-range size and then scaled up.
The cup gets wider but not deeper, and the band gets longer but not stronger.
Then you notice the band creeping up your back, straps digging in, and the center gore floating away from your chest.

What a supportive H cup bra needs:

Structured side panels that keep the cup from collapsing outward
A firm, wide band with three or four hooks,
because the band carries most of the weight
A wire that follows the full breast root, not one that cuts in at the sides
Deep cups, not just wide ones
Wide, adjustable straps that spread the load across your shoulders

Is your bra actually fitting? Check these 3 things in the mirror.

You don't need a tape measure to spot a fit problem.
Put on the bra you wear most and check:

The Band. It should sit level around your back, and you should be able to fit two fingers under it. If it rides up, it's too loose.
Most of your support comes from the band, not the straps.

The Cups. No spilling over the top or sides, and no gaps or wrinkles. If you spill, go up a cup size. If the fabric gapes, go down.

The Center Gore. The small panel between the cups should lie flat against your breastbone. If it floats away from your chest, the cups are too small.

Your cup size isn't a fixed number.
It changes when your band size does.
A cup letter only means something relative to its band.
A 36D holds more volume than a 34D, even though both say "D."
That's why sister sizes exist.
These two hold the same cup volume:
34DD
36D

What that means for your fit:
Band feels loose and you go down a band size?
Go up a cup letter to keep the same room in the cups.
Cups feel tight but the band fits well? Try a bigger cup, not a looser band.
Band riding up your back? The band is too loose. Your cups may be fine.
