We were soo delighted that children's book author Patrice Gopo made time to visit our Bleecker Street shop on a trip to NYC this weekend, looking absolutely fabulous in her Art Basil dress! During her visit, Patrice made a stop at the , which had been a special place for her father growing up, and was able to find all three of her books on the shelves! A Jamaican American raised in Alaska herself, Patrice has a new book available on pre-order now called Beyond Alaska's Window, which explores how one family keeps their culture present in their lives, even when home is very far away. If you have a young reader in your life, we'd love for you to check it out!

We were thrilled to meet and interview Karin Moejes recently, who is the Coral Reef Programme Lead at Coastal Oceans Research and Development in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO) East Africa, a research and conservation organization dedicated to marine and coastal ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean. We asked Karin to highlight a current initiative she's especially excited about, and she told us about her project to capture underwater footage of Kenyan coral reefs and share it with coastal communities using virtual reality headsets, so that everyone has the opportunity to witness what lives beneath the waves. She explained: "Storytelling is one of the oldest and most powerful tools we have for connecting people to nature and to each other. To collect old stories, folklore, and mystical tales of the sea from Kenyan coastal communities to weave into a short film, so that the world can hear from the people who have contributed the least to climate change, yet are standing on the front lines of its consequences." We were so thrilled to be able to share the story of the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland (AAQGO) in our newsletter today, and are deeply honored to hang the "Love" quilt by longstanding member, Madlyn Jones, in our Fillmore Street shop. We were first introduced to the organization through our wonderful customers, the five Vitero sisters, Blanche, Julia, Dolores (Dee Dee), Ginger and Inja. Born and raised in the East Bay, they all grew up with sewing and art as a part of their lives, and as adults became prominent quilters, in particular Julia, Dolores and Blanche. Many thanks to Madelyn Jones, Sandi Knight, Marie Taylor, Ora Clay, Katie Wishon, Carolyn Pope-Chappell, Patricia Bass Bailey, Jacquelyn Carter, ReEllis Dotson-Newman, Amal Johnson, Marilyn Handis, and especially Dee Dee and the Vitero sisters for sharing their photos, their work, and their story with us!

It's always amazing to think about how many individual artisans' careful attention is given to each textile, even before it comes to life as a dress! 💫💕 The fabric for our newest Shipshape maxi was hand-loomed by the skilled weavers at Sasha, in West Bengal, and then sent along to the incredible cut and sew team at SOKO Kenya! We're absolutely thrilled with how these dresses turned out, and we are so appreciative of all of the work that went into developing and creating such a gorgeous, wearable piece of art!
