Your baby doesn’t breathe air inside the womb! So, how do they get oxygen? Because the baby is surrounded by fluid, their lungs are filled and non-functional for breathing. Instead, the mother's body acts as the baby's external lungs! Oxygen from the mother's blood diffuses across the placental barrier directly into the baby's bloodstream—without their blood ever mixing. This oxygen-rich blood travels through the umbilical vein, cushioned inside the umbilical cord by Wharton's jelly, straight into the baby's heart and body. Unique circulatory shunts, like the Foramen Ovale and Ductus Arteriosus, bypass the collapsed lungs completely. Finally, waste products like carbon dioxide flow back through the umbilical arteries to the placenta to be cleared by the mother—all until that very first breath at birth!

“Your Arms and Legs Started as Tiny Buds! 😱👶”

During early embryonic development, the arms and legs begin as tiny outgrowths called limb buds. The upper limbs appear around week four, followed shortly by the lower limbs. These buds gradually grow and develop into arms, legs, hands, and feet. Fingers and toes begin to separate as tissues develop, while bones, muscles, and nerves form to support movement. It’s amazing how the human body builds these complex structures before birth!

Nose Formation

The human nose develops through a complex process called facial embryogenesis. Around the fifth week of development, specialized tissues called nasal placodes appear on the developing face. These tissues form nasal pits, while surrounding facial structures grow and merge to shape the nose and nostrils. This coordinated process establishes the anatomical structures involved in breathing and the sense of smell.

“Before a baby can smile, the mouth has to build itself first! 👶👄”

“During early development, the mouth begins forming from specialized tissues in the developing face. The upper and lower jaws take shape, while the tongue begins developing inside the oral cavity. The palate then forms and separates the mouth from the nasal cavity. As these structures mature, they prepare the baby for essential functions like feeding, swallowing, breathing, and eventually speech.”

👂 HOW DO YOUR EARS FORM BEFORE YOU’RE EVEN BORN?

“Your ears begin developing surprisingly early in the womb. Around week 4, tiny areas called ear placodes appear on the embryo’s head. These develop into the structures of the outer, middle, and inner ear. By later stages, the cochlea and balance organs continue to develop, preparing the body for hearing and balance. 👶🧬👂

From a tiny group of cells to the amazing human ear—embryonic development is incredible!”
