Two and a half years ago now I picked up a bit of work on a film called The Deb. What I didn’t know that morning was that I would break both my wrists that night and spend the next week in hospital. However, I was absolutely determined to finish the job and slowly but surely over the following weeks I painstakingly cut and tooled around 50 silk flannel flowers, managed to wire some together to make a hairpiece that would match the dress that the flowers were made to trim, and added some trimming to an existing cowboy style hat, all while having a cast on each arm. It turned out to be the perfect rehab task, but I certainly don’t recommend the experience!

10 years ago I was asked to do what has to be the ultimate dream job for a theatrical milliner; make hat shapes for the Ascot scene in My Fair Lady. Although I had just been diagnosed with cancer for the first time, there was no way I was going to turn this job down. I did as much work as I possibly could before my surgery, and then finished the rest before my treatment with the help of and (and the support of all my doctors!) I get such a thrill every time I see this clip. I can spot at least 5 pieces that came from my work room and I’m still so very proud. with .repost

Career goal unlocked ✅ When making the hats for the Australian production of MJ the Musical, I was asked if I could make some Astaire top hats for both the Broadway production and the First National Tour of the US. Those hats were finally shipped last week. While technically my work has been on tour in the US before, it feels like quite a milestone to be on Broadway!

I really feel like I have achieved theatrical millinery bingo in 2025. I seem to have done all sorts of different things this year, as well as being both deathly quiet and ridiculously busy at various points of the year. I have made period and contemporary work for shows locally, interstate and overseas. Made for theatre, film and TV. Created custom pieces for private clients and sold direct to the public. Here’s to all this and more in 2026. Hatty New Year everyone!

As the working year comes to a close, it’s time to wish everyone a happy festive season. Really wishing we had a few more snowflakes instead of 39 degree Celsius days, but that’s Christmas in Australia for you!
