In March 1979, San Francisco’s underground Deaf Club hosted one of the most important early performances by Dead Kennedys. This is the last show with their original five-piece lineup (including 6025 on rhythm guitar and Ted on drums). The set is pure chaotic energy: a disco-tinged “Kill the Poor,” the early version of “When Ya Get Drafted” called “Back in Rhodesia,” the unreleased “Gaslight,” blistering takes on “California Über Alles,” “Holiday in Cambodia,” “Police Truck,” and covers of “Have I the Right?,” “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” and “Viva Las Vegas.” Released in 2004, Live at the Deaf Club remains one of the few official live documents of the band at their hungriest and most dangerous. If you want to hear what the San Francisco punk scene actually felt like in 1979, this is it.
