Over the years, she had even recruited Uncle Gary, a self-proclaimed “machinist” who ran her Gammill quilting machine and helped with all her projects. A week after Aunt Bert’s funeral, I woke up to the thought, “I wonder what her sons did with that quilting machine.” A few Facebook messages later and I was on my way to Missouri to pick it up. Aunt Bert was a traditional quilter who took both grea
t pride in her creations as well as gifting them to her loved ones. Aunt Bert’s quilting machine marks my own return to quilting after 16 years away. As I remember what I loved about this creative process, I am thrilled to connect my memories of Aunt Bert with the sewing process and then share the final quilts with my own loved ones. My quilts are more modern designs, perhaps, but the process of quilting is the same and I believe the products-- the quilts themselves-- are timeless.
