My name is Kira Dulaney and I have been designing knitting and crochet patterns since 2006, and selling kits since 2011. ove and then figure out how to show it to its best advantage - for me it all starts with amazing yarn! Kira K Designs patterns have a streamlined and eminently wearable aesthetic, and with over one hundred knitting and crochet designs in a range of skill levels, you’re sure to find a garment or accessory that you’ll love to create. Kits with indie dyed yarn and any necessary notions make it even easier to knit or crochet a successful and stunning project. I have been teaching fiber arts classes and hosting crafty events in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond since 2002. I grew up exploring various crafts and sharing skills with friends, and worked in both a fabric shop and a yarn shop which inspired me to try new techniques and experiment with all kinds of projects. I love collaborating with other crafty small business owners, teaching new skills to students, and bringing groups to visit my favorite yarn shops and fiber farms. Oh my gosh, I had the best time at DFW Fiber Fest and also I am so exhausted! 4.5 days, 6 classes, over 120 students, and connections with too many fiber friends to count.

I stole the action shot of me teaching drop spindle spinning from Jeniece Lusk Jeniece. The collages are student work mostly from needle felting but also creative tapestry weaving and visible mending. Everyone was so enthusiastic and creative and, very importantly, kind to themselves while learning new skills.

An early alarm and non-stop flight and I arrived in Texas for DFW Fiber Fest which kicks off tomorrow!

I often bring knitting or crochet on planes, and alternate with reading (or do both if it’s easy knitting) but this time I packed embroidery in my carry on. I’m on track to finish in time to wear this dress when teaching one of my Visible Mending sessions!

I’ve already stitched a bee and some flowers over worn areas near the pockets, and this butterfly is covering up a stain. The stick-and-stitch pattern is from By Hand Craft Co • Rosanna and I’ll fill in the outline with a 🌈 sashiko thread.

See all that luggage? Those bags are 95% full of materials for my six classes with over 120 students. It’s going to be a busy and wonderful four days!

Are you excited for Lambtown Festival in just over six weeks? I sure am! It’s been my favorite event for over a decade and I spend most of the year preparing for it along with other dedicated volunteers (shout out to Roy Clemes & Clemes, Inc. Brooke Brooke Sinnes and Rijel Rijel Lewis for being an awesome team)

This is the 40th annual festival and it’ll be bigger than ever with more workshops, vendors, busses, activities. There are lots of competitions and demonstrations to watch, plus meetups to connect with other crafters. You’ll definitely want to come for more than one day and can even camp onsite and wake up to sheepy sounds.

I’m a board member, the workshop chair, and Wool on Wheels bus organizer. This past weekend I spent a day with about fifty volunteers preparing student and volunteer swag bags and Wooly Adventures activity materials.

I’m teaching my full day version of Visible Mending, where we have time to explore needle felting, woven patches with Speedweve looms, and embroidery to turn rips and stains into opportunities for creative embellishment. The full day gives us time to practice, play, and dive deeper into trickier techniques, and there’s still some room to join.

I’ll also be a vendor with lots of knitting and crochet kits plus useful tools and By Hand Craft Co • Rosanna embroidery kits. I’m also part of the largest Craft Among Friends giveaway of the year with an awe-inspiring prize which will be displayed in my booth in Denverton Hall.

I’ve had a quiet but nice birthday, enjoying activities that I don’t always have time for. I’m a naturally busy person and recharge with time at home, but it’s good to get out into the woods sometimes!

I had fun teaching for the Bay Area Crochet and Knitting Guild today, and they crocheted so many beautiful flowers! Along the way we reviewed reading patterns and stitch diagrams, using markers to help know where to finish the round, and the logic behind the names of stitches.

I’ll be back to teach Visible Mending in just a couple months! If your guild is looking for instructors, either in person or virtually, let me know. I love how guild members help each out and cheer each other on during classes.

Embellishing your clothing just got easier! These preprinted stickers from By Hand Craft Co are easy to stitch through, then dissolve in water when you’re done. Peel the back, stick them to your fabric, stitch, and wash! Each set includes a variety of images, with some designs repeated, often in different sizes.

Use these stick-and-stitch patterns to jump start an embroidery or visible mending project, then freehand other details to make it your own! They can be stitched with either embroidery floss or sashiko thread, and you can simply follow the outlines or color in the designs.

I can’t wait for my contributor copy of PURL Magazine Issue No. 1 to arrive! This will be one to keep on the shelf for reference, no question.

I wrote about the cast on that I’m shocked almost nobody knows even though the matching bind off is the one everyone does most of the time!

I have articles in the works for the second and third issues of PURL and am mulling over ideas for the fourth. It’s really going to be groundbreaking in the world of knitting magazines, with deep dives into a variety of subjects plus a few patterns to practice new techniques. Believe me, you’ll want to subscribe or ask your favorite yarn shop to start carrying it.

My Visible Mending students at Flock Fiber Festival were wonderfully enthusiastic today! We wove a patch with a Speedweve loom and tried some embroidery stitches. I’m teaching this next at DFW Fiber Fest Natural Fiber Fair and a special full day version at Lambtown Festival

August 8th Kira will teach Beginning Knitting and Beginning Crochet at Aranea Craft Studio in Hayward. Aranea Craft Studio has a quiet classroom and smaller group which create a nice environment for learning. Kira is a patient teacher experienced with different learning styles.

New knitters will learn to cast on, knit, and use a safety line in case of mistakes.

New crocheters will learn chain stitch, half double crochet, and how to use stitch markers to keep track of the ends of rows.

Both groups will start a cowl and leave ready for some daily practice until it’s complete. These classes are perfect for brand new crafters, those coming back after a long break, or folks who learned recently but are pretty sure they’re doing something wrong.
